Baffins preview - Saturday Feb 25th

AFC Stoneham’s unbeaten home record is on the line again when they take on Baffins Milton Rovers side.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham are back at home after two league games on the road, beating Moneyfields and most recently Horndean in an important match at the top of the table.

Liam Callaghan’s goal was enough to separate the two sides and for the Purp’s to take all three points back to Stoneham Lane.

They come into this game top of the recent form guide and have won six games on the bounce.

Baffins Milton Rovers:

The away side also come into this game is flying form, winning five of their last seven in all competitions.

They most recently beat Lymington Town of the Southern League Division One South 7-6 on penalties in the Hampshire Senior Cup, progressing to the next round in a shock upset.

However, they are still without their top scorer Tom Vincent who suffered a broken cheek and fractured jaw in their defeat to Bemerton on January 21st.

This means their main threat up top comes from their second highest scorer Kelvin Robinson, a player who has scored 11 goals this season and who links up well with captain Jason Parish.

Last Five Meetings:

24/01/23 - AFC Stoneham 1-1 Baffins Milton Rovers (WLC)

Baffins win 4-5 on penalties.

Sunday Round Up

U7 Panthers

Panthers U7 match report

Well done today boys.

Another good win against a physical Colden Common U8 team. Though you all battled superbly, especially with only 1 sub and the hot weather. Jacob had little to do, but his goal kicks and distribution were great. Morgan defended brilliantly with some great runs up field. Evan & Edison were excellent in midfield, tackling, passing and shooting, with 1 magic moment from Evan. Matthew lead the line well, with some important tackles, and also managed to get a brace. But my man of the match went to Seth. Your work rate, strength on the ball and shooting was outstanding today, with a hat trick of magical moments. Well

done Seth, well done all of you today for not giving up.

U8 Panthers

Disappointing late afternoon game today. Some early mistakes meant that we were chasing the game very early on. Because of their physicality Hythe and Dibden U9 Dynamites made it challenging to close down or break away on goal. Despite the challenging game the Panther U8 boys battled until the end and managed to recover a couple of goals, one from Hayden and another from Jack, which meant there was only one goal difference at the final whistle. Player of the Match went to Hayden for his effort, work rate and determination.

U9 Panthers

Well done today boys, that was a hard game. Considering we only had 1 sub and in that heat and sun, you all done brilliantly. Your battling, work rate and energy was outstanding.

As I said after the game, I’m only going to give the MOM trophy if you deserved it, and David, you thoroughly deserved it this week, even if you did get it last week. That penalty save and about a dozen first class saves

Special mention to Jenson and Henry for their magical moments.

Well done all of you for not giving up.

U9 Spitfires

Spitfires came up against St Francis Knights and had their trademark slow start which found themselves behind but then struck back through Brody Hibberd and an excellent Elliott Finch free kick. Some heroic Goalkeeping from Hector Hobbs kept the opposition at bay while there was a constant threat upfront from Spitfires, but in the 4th quarter the opposition pressure broke through.

POM went to Elliott Finch.

Unlucky though boys, up until the last 10 mins you were definitely in this game, we go again next week!

U9 Wolves

AFC STONEHAM Wolves v Salisbury

After a couple of weeks where we had dropped our levels of performances and play! We today bounced back to the levels we've produced for most of the season!! An outstanding show of what football is about from both sets of teams! Attitude and playing positively on the front foot.

So many positives to take from today. Both Goalkeepers were outstanding when between the sticks.

Whoever played up front pressed and worked tirelessly for the team backed up by the reading of the game from midfield.

So proud of each and every single player today. We outplayed a very strong team. Caleb on his return to the team after 18months away scoring 2 and equally as a whole the team working wonders! Special mention to Harrison, Reggie and Tayo who were incredible in how they played today. However MOM went to TOM NOSS who showed me exactly what I had been asking from him today and his attitude and effort added to his passing decisions and grafting back to make important tackles.

Well Done Tom

And well done WOLVES

U11 Jaguars

AFC Stoneham U11 Jaguars vs Littleton Juniors Youth U11 Ospreys

A dominant display from start to finish for the Jags today.

Early goals from Wezi and Egit set the tone for what would be one of the best Jags performance so far this season.

Harry B added to the goals thanks to some great passing and running along the wing from Sammy.

In the second half the goals kept coming.

Egit and Wezi adding to their tally and Zohair heading in from a corner.

The goal of the game came from Sammy, cutting in from the wing before rifleing the ball home from the edge of the area.

It wasn't all about the attack though, the defensive team stayed strong and worked hard as a unit to protect Riley in goal and to make sure of the well deserved cleansheet.

A great all-round team effort today, every player playing their part!

Parents player of the week goes to Sammy, an amazing performance all over the pitch rounded off with a cracking goal

Coaches player of the week goes to Sammy, difficult to choose anyone else. Did exactly what was asked of him going forward as well as tracking back with some amazing last ditch tackling.

Jag of the week goes to Jacob. Worked hard in training and played an important part in today's cleansheet. Was asked to play in a more defensive role than usual and never once looked uncomfortable playing out from the back

U11 Spitfires

The U11 Spitfires produced a mature performance in their cup game today against AFC Lakeside to come out winners. The boys played some pleasing football by passing the ball around well on a very uneven pitch. Hat tricks came from Ethan and Freddie, with Alfie L scoring two. Other goals came from Charlie, James, Alfie B, Bushy and Forbes. Man of the match went to Forbes for some positive runs forward and passing throughout the game.

U11 Wolves

It was smiling faces on a day of sunshine with the Wolves once again performing well as a team, this time against a high pressing opposition.

Central defenders Fuku and Alfie needed to be calm and decisive in winning the ball then maintaining possession and playing intelligent forward passes.

Once again Dominik had to make a great save early on, this time tipping a fierce shot over the bar.

Dylan and Harry and later Jude were closing down well in their wide positions and supporting our counter attacks that were often started by the excellent midfield pairing of Jude and Rayane and finished by great interplay between the skillful Adam and the amazing Muhammed who is our Wolf of the Week.

There were good performances also from today's subs who are both pushing hard for a starting place. Evan was at his best as the tough left-sided attacking midfielder and was unlucky not to score from a powerful long range shot, while Harrison came deeper to try and win the ball and drive forwards and was often putting pressure on opposition defenders.

Well done Wolves! We are so proud of you all.

U12 Jaguars

Hamble Club Youth U12 Spitfires 2

AFC Stoneham U12 Jaguars 1

In the Spitfires’ managers own words, the Jaguars put in a complete team performance that deserved to take the three points. Instead, the Jaguars went down to late goal from distance to leave empty handed against their hosts, but should be immensely proud of a performance that saw the opposition management and supporters claim the Jaguars to be the best team they have played against this season.

The game was extremely competitive from the off. The hosts, a big, powerful team, controlled the early possession, but a defence extremely well organised by Isaac saw the only threat as hopeful shots from distance. By degrees, the visitors began to assert their authority on the game as the first half went on. The combination of Archie and Freddie down the left had the Hamble defence constantly uneasy, whilst Elliot and Charlie led the press in knocking the Spitfires out of their stride. The midfield trio of Krish, Matteo and Fred bossed the centre of the park, more than matching their opponents for physicality and ability. Chances were at a premium at both ends and both teams worked hard to negate each other’s threats down the flanks. Jamie and John proved adept in their defensive positioning and calmness on the ball, and one particular tackle from Jamie on their tallest player was more akin to a woodcutter felling a large oak tree.

At the beginning of the second half, Elliot once again set the tempo by charging down the kick off to unsettle their midfield. The Jaguars continued with their relentless pressing game and the chances started to flow. Matteo acrobatically bicycle-kicked an effort just wide, Krish was unlucky with a shot from distance, Archie saw a drilled shot from outside the box tipped over and Elliot hit the bar from a free kick. Then, at last, the pressure told, when Fred, who had been timing his runs into the box to perfection throughout, ran onto a ball and rifled it superbly into the corner for his first Jags goal. It was the least the visitors deserved having dominated most of the game to that point.

However, the level of energy and effort that the Jaguars had poured into the game in warm conditions began to take its toll, and the hosts found themselves with a little more time and space. It was Hamble that now carried the danger. Finn made two exceptional saves, having enjoyed a relatively quiet game to that point. Isaac put in a phenomenal block when a goal looked certain, and both Hamble wingers struggled hard to gain any real advantage over the obdurate Archie or Jamie. After a couple of goal mouth scrambles, a chance fell to a Hamble midfielder to blast in; then in the final two minutes the hosts centre forward smashed an unstoppable shot in from distance to take a fortuitous win.

The Jaguars may have left the pitch out on their feet, but in dominating a team unbeaten and top of the league, they have yet again provided a performance that belies their position in the table. Up the Jags!

U13 Spitfires

Spitfires travelled down the road to play away to BTC Pumas in a game of 2 halves. Spitfires were the better team in the 1st half and eventually took the lead through Henry Fawcett after chasing a lost cause to tap home into an empty after a mix up with their keeper.

Harley Marjason almost doubled the lead with a great header from a free kick but hit the outside of the post.

2nd half was very strange and the boys were flat and never really created anything. BTC got their equaliser and if not for a fantastic save by joint POM Morgan Fryer would have gone ahead. There were very few chances created in the 2nd half and game ended in a draw. Archie McQuiston was the other shared POM after a faultless 1st half display and can’t recall the opposition getting past him in the 1st half.

U13 Panthers

Under 13 Panthers picked up another win today as we try and push for promotion.

We started brightly and took the lead through Lucas before a lapse in concentration allowed our opposition to equalise.

We came out in the second half with a lot more pace in our game and applied more pressure resulting in a hatrick for Sam Robbo and a brace for Ewan Halliday.

The game finished 6-1.

Man of the Match went to Cole today, he was strong and commanding in defence when called upon, made some brilliant driving runs out with the ball and played the pass of the game.

U16 Spitfires

Spitfires played home to Hamble United. Drew 4-4 but boys were hard done by as deserved to win the game. Aaron Batista put us ahead from the penalty spot followed by a 2nd after a superb through ball and cooly finished. Hamble pulled 1 back only for POM Jack Polkinghorne to regain our 2 goal lead.

2nd half boys started well and went 4-1 ahead after our 2nd penalty this time scored by Ollie Payne. Sadly the game ended in a draw which was harsh on the boys but proud how they all handled themselves in a difficult/physical game!

U18 United won 1-0 at Bashley to record a great win with Jude Cowan scoring the only goal of the game.

Well done to all of our teams !

Saturday Round Up

AFC Stoneham Tigers U7'S

Was a slow start from us ,we done well to get ourselves back into the game with some good defending and saves. We got infront with some good passing but let the other team back into it.The boys didn't really get going today ,there was lots of energy but it didn't fall into place ,but they never gave up and carried on until the final whistle.

Overall for the game to finish equal was about fair.

MOTM: ALEX

U7 Hurricanes

Great match for the boys, some great passing and tackling on display and the boys really got stuck In, Haseeb and caleb managed to hit the onion bag twice each.

Today parents player went to Ryder who put his all in to the game and had a moment of magic, MOTM went to Leo with a magical moment and a brilliant assist and then he went and switched it up and played in a different position in the last quarter and was a menace in defence.

U7 Wolves

Wyvern were today's challenge for the Wolves and we were treated to another entertaining match.

Wyvern caught us half asleep in the first minute to take the lead but we soon took control of possession with Jack and Shay working hard and playing some confident, high quality football. The ever menacing Ollie got free and got us level with a well placed shot. A rare appearance in goal for Jacob in Q2 and Wyvern forced him into several excellent saves including a great stop from a free kick. Vinnie played a deeper role than usual and his determination and quick feet in midfield got us up the pitch time and again. A lesson for all to play to the whistle followed when everyone stopped expecting a free kick to be given, everyone except Harry who stayed alive to find the net.

Into the second half with all to play for and Jack found space on the right hand side for a slide-rule pass for a delighted Louie to tap in. Jacob's strong tackling started a counter attack which saw Ollie run the length of the pitch for a terrific moment. Jack got in and calmly slotted one before turning provider for Ollie to claim his hat trick. We tired a little towards the end and lost a bit of shape and with it a few goals from Wyvern but Harry stole in from a big goal kick from Ollie to cap another brilliant team performance. So pleased with the work rate and passing interplay on show on a consistent basis from this team, their awareness of danger and calmness in front of goal is getting great results and they players are developing individually and as a team.

With an all action display, two assists and a goal Jack took the coaches award and for a great display in goal and in defense Jacob won the fans award but all the other boys will rightly feel they deserved it today!

U10 Girls Panthers

AFC Stoneham U10 Panthers 4 Hartley Wintney U10 Tigers 1

The Panthers have been working hard in training over the last few weeks and we saw the benefits put into practice with some brilliant passing and ball control today.

A goal from the opposition in the first quarter made the Panthers come back fighting in the second, with a quick equaliser by Alisha (her 20th of the season) followed by a fantastic goal from Dolcie. Tenacious running from Grace brought the third goal, and put us in a strong position going into the break.

The Panthers had great composure and the new defensive midfield position along with excellent defending gave us the foundation to create even more chances, with great wing play.

The final quarter saw a first with Freya moving from her usual centre half position to centre forward, where she dominated the defence. A lot of unselfish play finally resulted in the chance we were all hoping for and a shot by Freya brought the final score to 4-1. Well done girls fantastic result against a team that puts us out of the cup earlier in the season. Fantastic progress.

Opposition Player of the Match: Alisha

Panthers Girls U11

Hythe & Dibden Lynx 0

AFC Stoneham Panthers u11. 4

In what could have been a tricky fixture, the Panthers produced a dominant display which ended in a convincing win.

Rosie was asked to mark Hythe’s strongest player - who caused us numerous problems at home - and did a brilliant job preventing her having time on the ball.

The first quarter of the game was quite even until Mirela broke through from midfield to open the scoring.

A brilliant pass from Emily then found Lyra who doubled the lead after her first effort was saved.

Mirela was having her best game for a while and got back to clear a dangerous attack before making the score 0-3. Still no smile though!

Hythe are a good team and did look dangerous on the attack but Ilyse and Victoria were dominant at the back and any chances they created were confidently saved by Abigail.

After a strong tackle from Aimee, Georgia ran through to make the score 0-4 and was unlucky no to get another late on.

U12 Girls Tornadoes

AFC Stoneham Tornadoes 3

AFC Porchester 1

Really good game of football by both teams, after a very close first half which looked like be 0-0 we had a free kick given for a foul on Millie. Amelie step up to take it and scored with a very well taken free kick to make it 1-0 at half time.

Second half the Stoneham girls come out and played really well. Millie Fear making it 2-0 to Stoneham. With 3 minutes to go the game looked over but we didnt clear our line and Porchester made it 2-1. It looked like a nervous last 2 mins but Millie Fear with some very good footwork scored to make it 3-1,

Well done girls great game

Horndean preview

AFC Stoneham travel away from home for the second game on the bounce when they take on an in-form Horndean side in the Wessex Premier League on Saturday 21st February.

 Horndean:

High-flying Horndean come into this game off the back of six straight wins, scoring a total of 26 goals in these matches.

Their most recent victory came away to Cows Sports, beating them 5-0 thanks to a Zackary Willet hattrick and goals from Conor Duffin and Rudi Blankson.

These three goals mean that Willet has netted 32 times in all competitions this season, meaning that he is just one goal away from equalling Stoneham’s top scorer Duarte Martins’ goal tally.

The Dean’s have the best defensive record in the league this season, conceding just 17 goals in 24 games, a statistic that will be tested against a free-flowing Stoneham attack who want to put some distanced between the two teams.

AFC Stoneham:

ThePurp’s come into this huge game in the race for second in fine form, unbeaten in 12 league games and most recently beating Moneyfields 3-1.

Goals from Liam Callaghan, Duarte Martins and Lewis Ross won Stoneham the three points on Friday night and put an end to their poor recent away form, something they will want to build upon at Five Heads Park.

Horndean are just two points behind Stoneham with two games in hand on the Purp’s, making this game of huge significance at the top of the table as both teams battle it out (alongside Bemerton) for second place.

The last meetings between the two teams shows how tight these games normally are, making this one a contest to keep your eye on as anything could happen.

Academy success at professional clubs

Whilst AFC Stoneham is very much a grassroots community club providing football for boys and girls at all levels we are always very proud when our players move onto professional clubs having played a very small part in their football journey.

We currently have many players training with Southampton, Chelsea, Brighton, Portsmouth, Swindon Town and AFC Bournemouth whilst expecting some of them to progress to signing academy contracts this summer.

From our girls teams six players have progressed into Southampton FC in the last 12 months with four at senior level whilst others have progressed to AFC Bournemouth and Fulham.

With the rapid development at our club amongst the younger girls age groups we are extremely proud to have an amazing eight girls currently in the U11 Southampton FC Elite Training Centre. Seven of them are pictured below in their Saints kit.

Well done girls and to all of our players.

Moneyfields preview

AFC Stoneham are on the road for the first time in four games as they travel to the Draper Tools Community Stadium to take on Moneyfields on Friday 17th February.

 Moneyfields:

Playing all home games on a Friday because of ground sharing, the Money’s will look to continue their solid home form as they take on a Stoneham side who don’t travel too well.

Due to playing their first 13 games of the season away from home, Moneyfields have had a run of home fixtures, with eight out of their last nine being at the Draper Tools Community Stadium.

In this period, they have picked up 15 points and scored 24 goals, showing why teams don’t want to come here and why they sit in a solid fifth position in the table.

Their top scorer is former Stoneham man Callum Laycock on 23 goals, who will look to add to his tally and get closer to his former strike partner Duarte Martins on the scoring charts.

AFC Stoneham:

The Purps come into this game off the back of their best result of the season, beating league leaders Portchester 2-1 and subsequently ending their 23-game unbeaten run.

Goals from Duarte Martins and Liam Callaghan won all three points, meaning that Stoneham have still won every game at home in the league this season.

However, Stoneham’s away form is a juxtaposition to their home results, failing to win on the road on their last three occasions, something that could lengthen when they come up against strong team with a good home record.

The Purps need to take their home performances on the road with them if they want to challenge at the top, with points on the board being essential as Horndean and Bemerton have games in hand to close in on them.

AFC Portchester match report

AFC Stoneham end Portchester’s unbeaten league run of 23 games without a loss as they beat them 2-1 in a fiercely competitive encounter that had two penalties and a red card.

ThePurps kept up their streak of winning every league game at Stoneham Lane this season, whilst being the first team in the division to take all three points off the league leaders.

Stoneham took a two-goal lead thanks to Duarte Martins and a Liam Callaghan penalty, given when a Portchester player produced a Luis Suarez-esque handball on the line, getting himself sent off in the process.

The uncharacteristically quiet Brett Pitman did slot home a penalty later in the game, but the 10-men of Portchester couldn’t get past the resilient Stoneham defence, meaning that they went home for the first time this season without anything.

It was a tense start to the game from the top two, with neither team managing to keep hold of the ball, but it was the away side who looked long in the opening stages, only to be met by the linesman’s flag on numerous occasions.

The left-hand side for Stoneham was their outlet in the early minutes, with a notable effort coming from a brilliant Cade Dyer cross, but the fully stretched Callaghan couldn’t quite turn the ball goal wards.

Martins also found himself two-on-one early on, with Callaghan in support, but his pass across goal to him had too much on it and the opportunity was wasted.

However, following good link up play between Scott Hills and Dyer, the ball arrived at the feet of Martins on the penalty spot, who found the bottom-right corner for his 32nd goal of the season.

The away side could and probably should have levelled the scoring just before half time when the ball found the dangerous Brett Pitman at the back post, but thePurps were let off big time as his shot went high and wide.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 1-0 AFC Portchester

There were no changes for either side at the break and the second half started with the Royals pinning Stoneham back and probing for an equaliser.

But the persistent pressure from the away side did leave them vulnerable at the back and the Purps capitalised on this, when Steven Mowthorpe failed to collect the ball and Callaghan’s header was handballed on the line, winning his side a penalty and Pearce receiving a straight red.

The man who won the penalty also took it and following a stutter on the run up, he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and gave Stoneham a two-goal lead.

Despite the red card, it was Portchester who dominated the rest of the second half as they looked to find a way back into this game and preserve their unbeaten record.

It didn’t take too long for the league leaders to respond either as they won a penalty of their own after the referee spotted a handball in the box.

Brett Pitman stepped up to take the penalty and smashed it past Callum Lee for his 39th goal of the season, making it a very nervy last 20 minutes for the home side.

Substitute Lewis Nagle was causing huge problems for the Portchester defence during the latter stages, with the winger being fouled on multiple times as he looked to counter-attack and give his defence a breather.

The referee added on 5 minutes as the Purps kept the ball in the corner and ran down the clock- a very professional end to the game from a very classy group of players.

Portchester’s first loss means that Stoneham are now only four points behind them with 13 games remaining, making the final stage of this season one to keep your eye on.

AFC Portchester preview

AFC Stoneham will aim to strip AFC Portchester of their unbeaten record in the league when they welcome them to Stoneham Lane on Saturday 11th February.

AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into their biggest game of the seasonon brilliant form, winning nine of their last 10 league games, with their last loss being at the hands of Saturday’s opponents.

Their most recent result was a 3-1 triumph over Shaftesbury, with Liam Callaghan, Duarte Martins and Scott Hills grabbing goals to maintain their unbeaten run at home.

Martins is the second top scorer in all competitions this season on 31 goals, only bettered by Portchester’s Brett Pitman, suggesting that you should get yourself down to Stoneham Lane if you want to see some goals.

Both teams are joint at the top of the form guide, winning five of their last six and drawing one, making first versus second a cracking game to watch as both teams look to end each other’s unbeaten record.

AFC Portchester:

The league leaders come into this game off the back of an 8-0 loss to Farnborough in the Hampshire Senior Cup, however they fielded a young squad for this game, perhaps a sign of respect to thePurps.

They have won 21 of their last 23 games and still remain unbeaten in the league this season, something they will want to maintain whilst snatching away Stoneham’s impressive home record.

Their danger man Brett Pitman is still the highest scoring player between the Premier League and step five football this season, but if he wants to add to his tally of 38 goals, he must take on the joint best defence in the league this season, equalled by themselves and Bemerton.

Last timeout when they played, a brace from Scott Jones and one from Marley Ridge was enough to edge Stoneham out 3-2 in front of 329 people, indicating that this could be another thrilling match to watch in this clash between the top two.

Fareham Town match report

AFC Stoneham maintain their unbeaten home record in the league by beating a resilient Fareham Town side 3-0 and stay second in the table.

After a scrappy first half, that saw Stoneham go into the break 1-0 up, thePurps showed their quality in the second and added another two to claim all three points.

An unchanged eleven for the home team had a competitive first 15 minutes against a Fareham Town side who previously beat Horndean, however neither goalkeepers were troubled during this period as both teams struggled to keep the ball.

Stoneham tried to get Lewis Nagle in behind early on, but Fareham’s full back Casey Bartlett-Scott had a great game and didn’t give him any breathing room.

The first real chance for Stoneham fell for Mat Bainbridge, but he couldn’t keep his shot down on the volley from the edge of the box, following a clearance from the defender.

The rest of the half was a scrappy affair that didn’t see much goalmouth action, until the first shot on target in the 38th minute led to the home side taking the lead.

Cade Dyer’s short corner was whipped into the box from Tommy Barnes and his ball found a man in purple at the back post, potentially with help from Scott Hills’ flick on, where it was then converted by Mat Bainbridge for his fifth goal of the season.

The quality dropped off for the remaining few minutes and the game started to get scrappy again, but Stoneham managed to go into the break 1-0 up.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 1-0 Fareham Town

There were no changes from either side at the break and Stoneham had a comfortable first 15 minutes holding onto their lead as Fareham didn’t trouble Callum Lee in goal.

However, following their first chance on the Stoneham goal, the Purps counter-attacked efficiently and doubled their lead on the hour mark.

Barnes’ long throw put Duarte Martins in behind on a two versus one situation as he had Nagle in support, who he later passed the ball to and as he went around the goalkeeper, Luke Deacon brought him down and the referee pointed straight to the spot.

Mr Reliable Scott Hills stepped up to take the penalty and smashed it into the bottom right-hand corner for his 18th goal of the season, putting the Purps 2-0 up.

After substitutions for both sides, Stoneham added a third through top scorer Martins just 12 minutes later.

Substitute Jake Thomson picked the ball up on the edge of the box and flicked it through to Martins, who inevitably found the back of the net, taking his tally to 30 for the season.

Martins almost got his brace and added a fourth, however he saw his header cannon back off the crossbar following a brilliant ball in from Hills.

It was a professional end to the game from Stoneham who didn’t allow the away side a consolation goal and Callum Lee kept his clean sheet intact, his first one since returning from injury.

Shaftesbury Preview

AFC Stoneham take on Shaftesbury for the first time this season in the Wessex Premier League on Tuesday 7th February with a 7:45pm kick-off.

 AFC Stoneham:

ThePurps come into this game in great form, winning eight of their last 10 and keeping up their unbeaten record at Stoneham Lane in the league this season.

Their last match was a 3-0 win over Fareham Town, in which goals from Mat Bainbridge, Scott Hills and Duarte Martins, saw Stoneham add another three points to their collection.

Goalkeeper Callum Lee also got his first clean sheet since returning from injury, something that will help Stoneham’s goal difference come the end of the season.

This was also top scorer Martins’ 30th goal of the season, something he will look to add to on Tuesday against a Shaftesbury team that has caused Stoneham problems in seasons before.

Shaftesbury:

Shaftesbury come into this match in fluctuating form, with their most recent result being a 3-0 defeat to league leaders AFC Portchester.

Finishing third last year, Shaftesbury have had a transition period that has seen new management come in, with the club now sitting in 8th on 32 points.

Their top scorer is Ashley Pope on 11 goals, with nine of these coming in the league, suggesting he could be a tough opponent against a Stoneham defence who have kept 11 clean sheets in the league this season.

This will be the first time these clubs have met this season, with the previous two being draws, showing that Shaftesbury are always tricky customers and that it should be a good game to watch!

Fareham Town Preview 4/2/23

AFC Stoneham are at home for the second successive league game as they take on an in-form Fareham Town in the Wessex Premier League on Saturday 4th February.

 AFC Stoneham:

The Purps come into this game off the back of midweek success after beating Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-1 in a fiercely competitive contest.

Goals from captain Jim Orvis and top scorer Duarte Martins were enough to edge past Bemerton and open up a six-point gap between themselves and third place.

Stoneham are in a good run of form as they are unbeaten in their last 8 league games, whilst maintaining an undefeated record at Stoneham Lane, something they will hope to continue Saturday.

However, they know it will be a tough task against an in-form side that previously beat them on the opening day of the season.

 Fareham Town:

10th place Fareham are currently on a run of three wins in a row, with their most recent being a 3-1 win against Division One side Andover New Street in the Wessex League Cup.

Last time out in the league, they pulled off a surprising win when they beat high-flying Horndean 4-3 in front of 300 people.

A brace from Jack Breed, as well as goals from Josh Benfield and Curtis Robbins, handed Horndean only their second loss in the Wessex Premier League, harming them in their pursuit for promotion.

Top scorer Benfield will look to continue his goal scoring run and score against Stoneham for the second time this season, with the player getting the winner in their 1-0 win over the Purpsback in game week one.

 Last Five Meetings:

02/08/22 Fareham Town 1-0 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

05/02/22 Fareham Town 0-5 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

02/10/21 AFC Stoneham 6-1 Fareham Town (PREM)

23/11/19 AFC Stoneham 3-1 Fareham Town (PREM)

12/09/17 Fareham Town 1-2 AFC Stoneham (SLC)

Bemerton Match report

AFC Stoneham edge past a resilient Bemerton Heath Harlequins side 2-1 to stay second in the Wessex Premier League.

Second versus third certainly did not disappoint the crowd on Tuesday night, with thePurps coming out victorious in a fast-paced and competitive affair.

The game was action-packed from the very first whistle, with both teams utilising their pacy wingers to spring an attack when possession was turned over.

It didn’t take long for Stoneham to gain the lead when the ball was flicked on by Lewis Nagle to Duarte Martins, who laid it off for Jim Orvis to pick his spot from the edge of the box and wrap the ball into the top left corner.

This goal meant that Stoneham had now scored inside the first 15 minutes in their last three games but, failing to win in their last two means that the statistic isn’t as impressive as it first seems.

Wingers Stuart Green and Danny Young were the clear route out of trouble for the away team as they looked to find them on numerous occasions, but Cade Dyer and Tommy Barnes dealt with their speed and trickery brilliantly to isolate them from the goal.

Stoneham’s goalkeeper Callum Lee had to make a few saves in the first half, with one of them being a fierce shot from Green on a one vs one, but the young goalkeeper got down well to palm it away from danger.

He also pulled out another world class save just minutes later after a controversial free kick was given right on the edge of the box, but the low shot under the wall from Young was saved smartly again by Lee.

It was Bemerton who ended the first half the better of the two teams, applying constant pressure to the Stoneham defence, but the home team managed to hold out and take a one goal lead into the half time break.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 1-0 Bemerton Heath Harlequins

The action didn’t take long to warm up in the second half when the away side came close to finding an equaliser, but Green’s acrobatic effort cannoned off the crossbar and prevented him from levelling the scoring.

Scott Hills and Lewis Nagle were causing problems yet again down the flanks, but they didn’t quite have the final ball to match the excellent pieces of skill on display.

The Purps started to dictate proceedings and pin Harlequins back during this period of the game, but the persistent crosses into the box were too comfortable for the defence who headed them away with ease nearly every time.

However, the home team reaped the rewards after switching up their tactics and within two passes, the ball was thread through to top scorer Martins, who inevitably rolled the ball past a helpless Patrick Creese for his 29th goal this season and gave his side a two-goal cushion with 25 minutes remaining.

Bemerton were frustrated at conceding a second and they seemed to channel this frustration into their game, forcing Stoneham back and putting them under siege for the remaining minutes.

After a spell of possession and a flurry of corners, Bemerton finally made good use of oneof them when the ball in from Young was nodded home by the statuesque Kane O’Keefe, unsettling Stoneham as they try and hold onto the lead.

But unfortunately for the away side the Purps managed to hold on for the last 10 minutes, claiming all three points in a huge game towards the top of the table, keeping them firmly in second place.

FULL TIME: AFC STONEHAM 2-1 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS

AFC Stoneham Starting XI: Lee; Barnes, Dyer, Wan, Clarke; Bainbridge, Welch (c), Orvis; Nagle, Martins, Hills

Weekend Round Up - 28/29 January

Weekend Round Up

U7 Panthers

Great game today boys against Hiltingbury Minis U8, your passing and movement just keeps getting better and better. Your vision and game reading is so good.

Jacob, once again some vital saves and great distribution.

Morgan and Caleb excellent at the back, tackling and driving forward with the ball. Morgan with a magical moment from the spot.

Evan and Edison was brilliant today in midfield, Controlling, passing, tackling and shooting. Evan with 3 magical moments.

Matthew and Harley were great in attack. Great footwork, dribbling and passing. Both with a magic moment each. But my man of the match went to Seth. His work-rate was outstanding, his close control, passing and shooting was brilliant today.

Well done Seth, well done all of you today.

U7 Wolves

This week the Wolves welcomed AFC Totton and were looking to build on the excellent form they've shown over recent weeks.

The early bird catches the worm and there aren't many earlier than Vinnie. Some great attacking interplay first with Fyfe and then with Harry created two chances in the first 5 minutes and Vinnie gave the goalkeeper no chance either time.

We continued to control play in the first half and were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jack which he slotted home with real confidence. Jacob and Louie dominated defensively and snuffed out every attack.

The second half gave Totton a chance to regroup and all credit to them for the way they battled back. We defended well as a unit with midfielders tracking back well but a slightly over keen tackle gave the opposition a foothold from the spot. We looked a little off the pace in the second half but a well taken throw from Fyfe was well attacked by Harry for a poacher's finish to give us a cushion. We were pegged back again though, some great football from Totton but we'll have to look at our positions defending throw ins. We responded in fantastic style though with the ball cycling through every player in quick succession, Louie, Jack, our new January signing Shay and then Ollie to run clear for probably the best team goal we've scored this year. The final goal went to the opposition late on, a great cross and a well controlled finish.

Players of the match went to Shay; who slotted into the team like he'd always been there and showed some great technique and movement and also to Louie; we gave him an important job to do today and he is putting everything into adding those skills to his game.

Overall an excellent result, really pleased with our passing and composure in front of goal.

Some things to work on no doubt but the Wolves keep on hunting!

U8 Panthers

A very tight game in a late afternoon kick off. Winchester City U9 Red are a strong and fast paced team who are very well rehearsed at closing players down rapidly. Neither team had scored right up until the final minutes of the 2nd quarter until some great passing from the Panther boys opened up the opponents which lead to a goal from Manny assisted by Jack. Not long following this Winchester City levelled the score. In the third quarter we scored a further two goals, both from Billy assisted by Freddie and Cooper respectively. In the last quarter our opponents got a couple of goals back, including one from a defensive error, which meant we ended the game level pegging. The Panther boys kept on battling right to the final whistle. Player of the Match went to Oscar for his attitude, positioning and tackling. We'd like to give a special mention to our referee who was enthusiastic, encouraging, engaging and provided extremely valuable advice and knowledge to the boys!

U9 Spitfires

U9 Spitfires were up against our very own Panthers in a great game of football and were evenly matched throughout. Some excellent build up play saw William Comper strike the ball home 1st but were pegged back instantly. Leo Duncalfe then volleyed home from a corner only for the Panthers to equalise again. Mazen Ismael then cooly slotted home to put us back ahead but then 2 quick fire goals, 1 of which was heavily assisted by the wind put the Panthers ahead. Elliott Finch then finished off another great move to put the scores back level. Panthers then got themselves 2 more goals with 1 again heavily wind assisted.

The Spitfire’s were all excellent today and deserved more but a very pleasing performance. POM went to Zach Curtis who was excellent in defence.

U9 Panthers

Great result today boys against a spirited Stoneham Spitfires.

It was a fight which they were up for and it took us until the 2nd half to realise we need to match them. When we did, the passing, moment and ball control was great and they just couldn’t handle it.

It wasn’t the same level as the last two weeks, but we dug in and got a good performance .

Man of the match went to Oliver, cracking magical moment and an all round battling performance. Never gave up and chased every ball. Well done Oliver. Special mention for magic moments from Jake 1, Henry 1 and Jenson 3. Well done all of you today.

AFC Stoneham Girls U10 Panthers 4 Hythe & Dibden Bobcats 0

A performance to be proud of by the Panthers this week. Our first game of 2023 got off to a fast start, with 2 goals in the first quarter by Grace & Mursal.

More positive play in the second quarter and some lovely play down the wings, resulted in an audacious back-heeled nutmeg from Alisha to make it 3-0.

3rd quarter saw the Panthers take the lead to 4-0, with Alisha getting her second of the game.

The final quarter was all about keeping that clean sheet, a great save by Ramona & some solid defending by Scarlett and Hollie meant clean sheet was secured. Great performance by the whole team.

Opposition player of the match: Scarlett

Panther of the week: Hollie

U11 Jaguars

AFC Totton Youth U11 Blue vs AFC Stoneham U11 Jaguars

Great game today with both teams working hard from the first to the last minute.

The Jags took the lead in the 5th minute, Zohair running at the Totton defense before laying it off to Alex to slot home. Totton came straight back and equalised 2mins later. Both midfields battled hard to win the ball, Will and Alex never giving up and chasing every loose ball.

When the ball did break for Totton the Jags were there with great goalkeeping from Riley and last gasp defending from Galileo. In the 2nd half Totton took the lead but that didn't last long thanks to a cracking freekick from Egit to equalise. Egit would score again to give the Jags a deserved lead but again Totton came back to draw level.

The game swung from end to end before Zohair ran onto a loose ball to once again charge forward before rolling the ball to Egit who completed his hattrick. Totton pushed for the equaliser and the Jags had to dig in and defend as a team but Totton did score. Both teams had chances but this was a fair result. A great game to watch if stressful for both sets of managers!

Parents player of the week goes to Egit, worked hard all over the pitch and was rewarded with a hattrick Coaches player of the week goes to Zohair, 2 assists and solid in midfield and defence when called upon

Jag of the week goes to Alex. Great attitude in training and helped the coach organise the rest of the team. Scored an important goal in the game today and kept working hard for the team!

U12 Panthers and Knights derby

It was a great game at the Stoneham Derby; U12 Panthers versus U12 Knights.

The Panthers scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute. Spencer worked the ball up the line, crossed to Travis who tapped it in.

A second Panthers' goal was scored from a combined effort by Spencer and Ollie but was unfortunately ruled offside.

The score at half time was 1-0 to the Panthers.

The second half was just as entertaining as the first. The Panthers continued pressing and scored from a goal kick, in the 34th minute, that was crossed in by Carl and sunk into the net by Travis- earning him his second goal of the match.

A penalty was awarded to the Knights in the 37th minute and despite the keeper getting a hand to it, they scored their first goal, bringing the score to 2-1 to the Panthers.

Impressively, in the 50th minute, Ollie's cross was turned in right at the far post by Owen, mid-slide. This was his first goal for the Panthers; well done Owen! The score then remained at 3-1 thanks to resolute defending by both teams.

An honorable mention goes to Harry who made some incredible tackles to win the ball back. He also took a ball straight to the face at close range and showed great resilience after the fact!

Man of the Match was awarded to Travis whose speed and positioning on the pitch was fantastic throughout.

The lads' teamwork this morning shone against a worthy opponent. After what has been a challenging few weeks, this was a well-deserved win!

U12 Girls Tornadoes

AFC Stoneham Tornadoes 3 Southbrook 0

A quarter final meet @ home for the Tornadoes.

Southbrook being a solid squad and one to watch fought a hard battle being 0-0 at half time. The tornadoes girls grit kept going with some great teamwork and play leading to a 3-0 win and pushing onto the Semi final plate cup

U12 Jaguars

AFC Stoneham U12 Jaguars 1

Winsor Utd Youth U12 Greens 3

In very much a game of the proverbial two halves, the Jaguars came up short against their title chasing opponents.

The hosts started relatively sprightly, and good combination play between Charlie, Elliot and Freddie created several threatening situations. The Jaguars looked relatively comfortable with the ball on the deck at the back and when on the ball, continued to try to play passing football. However, the Jaguars offensive energy wasn’t matched by their defensive energy or awareness, and Winsor took the lead halfway through the first half when they took advantage of slack marking to convert a cross at the back post. One goal quickly became two when the Winsor centre back hit an unstoppable shot from range into the top corner, leaving Finn, who made several outstanding saves in the game, completely helpless. On the stroke of half time, Winsor extended their lead further when indecisiveness at the back saw a loose pass pounced upon by the visiting forward who was allowed time to slot into an empty net.

To the boys credit, they responded very positively to the half time team talk, and took the field with renewed vigour. The second half was a much more even affair with good chances at both ends, though a combination of superb goalkeeping and staunch defending by Jamie, Isaac, Archie, and latterly Charlie, saw the hosts prevent their opponents adding to their score. Instead, it was Stoneham who managed to find the net with an expertly taken free kick from Elliot.

The Jaguars take on Winsor again next week, and will be keen to make amends with regards to scoreline and performance.

U13 Spitfires

U13 Spitfires travelled to Hythe & Dibden and after not playing since 4th December the Spitfires came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders! Two quick fire goals from Ethan Cripps and George Polkinghorne set the tone and we really took a strangle hold from there, finishing the half 4-0 up with Harry Halligan and Harley Marjason scoring the other two.

The start of the second half was much the same with Hythe’s goalkeeper making one or two notable saves. The Spitfires kept knocking and eventually got the fifth with Henry Fawcett hitting a low effort into the far corner.

Player of the match was awarded to our new January transfer debutant goalkeeper Joshua Beardsworth, who didn’t have much to do in terms of saves but his organisation and distribution was top notch.

The U15 Knights are through to the semi final of the Testway League Cup having beaten Alderbury 2-0 away this morning.

The goals were scored by Brandon (30’) and Harry (68’).

Scrappy game at times given the pitch and the fact the opposition worked their socks off to stop us playing (expect the same next week). Boys played much better second half and we battled to a good win in the end. MOTM goes to Joe. Solid and aggressive at the back and worked tirelessly all game (as did the rest of the defense). Semi finals here we come. Well done boys!!!

U16 Spitfires

U16 Spitfires played at home to AFC Totton in a very evenly matched contest. The game was very tight and few chances until AFC Totton broke clear and a great saving tackle stopped them scoring but the resulting corner was headed home to give them the lead. Boys pushed for an equaliser but a couple of defensive errors found us 2 behind. 2nd half the boys were more dominant and started to create more chances than our opponents but just could not find that finish. It wasn’t until the last kick of the game we got a goal following Jack Polkinghorne’s sweet shot being saved which Ollie Payne followed up to finish but was too little to late.

The game was dedicated to Kim Morgan who sadly passed away in the week. Kim is the wife of our coach Andy & mother to our player Fin who has been part of this team since u9’s. Our thoughts are with Andy & Fin at this sad time. The boys observed a minutes silence before the game today

as a mark of respect.

U18 Panthers

“What a goal!”

Travel the length and breadth of this fine country and you’ll struggle to see a better goal than Alessio Ardani’s first today. The look up and arching 30 yard shot over the stranded keeper was outstanding, but the quick throw from Dylan Whaley, and clever headed knock on from Alfie Smith summed up a terrific squad performance today from U18 Panthers, as they despatched higher league opposition 5-1 in the cup.

And yet, against the run of play, it was the opposition that went ahead, and could have doubled their advantage was it not for a phenomenal double save from Liam Small.

However, this team has resolve, which when matched with ability, intensity, confidence and great coaching means that they are a pleasure to watch.

They deservedly drew level with a close range finish from Josh Marks, following a Dizzie Cross freekick, before Alessio was cruelly denied a goal by an over-zealous referee’s whistle. Had an advantage been played, Alessio would have opened his account with a shot from the edge of the box, having managed to stay on his feet after a Hamble challenge. Tough to take.

But justice was served a matter of minutes later, when Alessio did score the wonder goal, seconds from the half time whistle.

From that point on there was only one team going to win the match. Alessio grabbed a second, before Matty joined him on the score sheet with a great header from a cross and then Alessio rounded off the day with his hat trick.

Every player contributed to a great performance, which was a pleasure to watch.

Man of the match: Dizzie Cross

Well done to all of our teams!

#upthepurps

Bemerton Preview

AFC Stoneham host Bemerton Heath Harlequins in a huge game at the top of the Wessex League table on Tuesday 31st January.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into this game off the back of a disappointing 2-2 draw away to Portland United on Saturday, their first draw in the Wessex Premier League this season.

They took a 2-0 half time lead thanks to a brace from Liam Callaghan, but Portland showed spirt under their new management to comeback in the second half and steal a share of the points.

The Purpsare three points above Tuesday’s opponents but have played two games more, making this an important game as a loss here would see Stoneham drop out of the top two for the first time since the start of January.

This will be Stoneham’s first of four home games on the bounce with the Purps still unbeaten at Stoneham Lane in the league this season, a run they will hope to continue Tuesday as they take on a close league rival.

Bemerton Heath Harlequins:

The Harlequins enter this game after an eight-goal thriller that saw them beat U.S Portsmouth 5-3 away from home.

Braces from Stuart Green and Greg Peel, as well as one from Ronan Clancy, meant that Bemerton took home all three points and moved above Horndean into third after they lostto Fareham.

They are currently unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions, whilst maintaining a run of 11 games without a loss in the league, with their only one coming against league leaders AFC Portchester.

Harlequins have recently lost their top scorer Reece Rusher, who has moved to Frome Town, meaning that Daniel Young now leads their scoring tally on 12 goals this season and they will hope he adds to this on Tuesday.

The two sides have only previously met twice in recent years, with both teams winning one, suggesting it will be a tight and competitive contest to watch.

Last Meetings:

17/09/22 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 5-1 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

03/12/19 AFC Stoneham 2-2 Bemerton Heath Harlequins (SWLC)

Baffins preview - League Cup quarter final

AFC Stoneham are back at home after 17 days away where they face Baffins Milton Rovers in the Quarter-finals of the Wessex League Cup.

AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham will look to get their 2023 back up and running on Tuesday following three postponements on the bounce, with a Semi-final awaiting the winner of this clash.

The Purps found the 10-men of Brockenhurst tricky to navigate in the previous round of this competition, scraping past the Badgers 3-2 thanks to a stoppage-time free kick from Cade Dyer.

Due to the unsolicited weather, Stoneham have been unable to play since January 7 th where they just edged out Cowes Sports 2-1, so they will be hoping for a more convincing performance this time around to beat a strong Baffins side.

Stoneham Lane has been somewhat of a fortress for The Purps this season, losing just two at home in all competitions, a trend they hope will continue on Tuesday in order seal their place in the Semi-finals.

Baffins Milton Rovers:

Baffins come into this game off the back of playing their first league game in 35 days, but a 2-0 loss at home to Bemerton Heath Harlequins means that they start their 2023 with a disappointing loss.

In addition, the away side will be without their top scorer Tom Vincent, who has 13 goals and club captain Jason Parish for this clash, with both players receiving red cards in their last outing. However, Baffins are arguably the most deserving team to play in this round of the competition, previously beating table-topping AFC Portchester in the second round, handing them only their third defeat in all competitions this season, with the other two being against teams in divisions above.

The Rovers will know that the fixture history between the two teams does not make good reading, however they have already knocked out the favourites for this competition so will be as hungry as ever to make it one round further than they did last season.

Last Five Meetings:

16/08/22 Baffins Milton Rovers 0-3 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

16/02/22 Baffins Milton Rovers 2-3 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

26/10/21 AFC Stoneham 3-0 Baffins Milton Rovers (PREM)

02/09/20 Baffins Milton Rovers 1-2 AFC Stoneham (FA CUP)

03/03/20 AFC Stoneham 3-2 Baffins Milton Rovers (SWLC)

Weekend Round Up

Weekend Round Up

AFC Stoneham U7 Tigers

Today we didn't play our best ,but we got there in the end ,lots of effort, some important saves from our keeper. Two good free kicks and our rock at the back today Elliott.

MOTM Elliott.

U7 Hurricanes

Good game today for the boys playing a strong side, the boys definitely were feeling the cold and played the best they could given the temperatures, the two teams battled it out and it was an end to end game, which was very equal. Leo and Caleb both had a magical moment and showed great team work, Parents player was awarded to Josh who always tried to find space to recieve a pass to open up the game, Seb was awarded motm for 2 great assists.

U7 Wolves report:

Back to business with a bang for the Wolves after last weeks fun with Sholing today's visitors. This is a match that means everything to both teams and last time the opposition had won it with the last kick.

Sholing opened the scoring inside the first minute despite a good dive from Louie in goal but the flow of the game in the first quarter galvanised the Wolves who defended as a unit with Jacob as the rock, supported well by the others and counter attacked well together. Sholing managed to get another and we couldn't take our chances in the first half.

3 minutes completely changed the game. Fyfe swung in a brilliant cross and Jack controlled his finish. Fyfe won the ball in the midfield and played Jack in again to level. The interplay between the front three was a joy to watch and more than Sholing could handle despite a really well organised defense. Jack turned provider and Ollie gave the keeper the eyes to give Wolves the lead. Sholing replied immediately though to set up a tense final quarter.

The ever tenacious Vinnie provided a threat up front, but it was Harry who managed to break free and hold off a challenge before driving the ball home. It was no less than deserved for a high energy, resilient and mature performance.

Louie took over from Jacob and both showed great leadership qualities to keep their team mates working to hold onto the game.

Immensely proud of that performance, especially the passing creativity going forward and the awareness and strength at the back.

Players of the match were Jack and Fyfe; their creativity and clever passing were the difference today.

These Wolves hunt in packs and they never give up.

U8 Panthers

Great Sunday morning game in the sun against Totton and Eling U9 Tigers. Right from the start the Panther U8 boys took control of the game. Fantastic passing by all, and seen to be really utilising the whole pitch. Fraser had a solid performance in goal. Logan, Vinnie and Oscar were strong in defence, staying calm on the ball and feeding through to the attacking players. Further up the pitch we had Jack, Hayden, Freddie, Manny and Billy all passing the ball with precision and creating fantastic goal opportunities. Goals today came from an opener from Jack, a dual from Hayden and further goals from Manny and Freddie. Player of the Match went to Vinnie for his controlled and solid defensive work. Well done boys, anyone would forget you're playing up a year!

U9 Rovers

U9 Rovers played out a 2-2 draw wiv Provision Newbury Predators in a cold sunny afternoon at SLC.

Took a while for the boys to get their rhythm but did take the lead from a ‘worldie’ by Chase Marjason just inside our opponents half. A second quickly followed after a great passing move finished off by Harrison Jacobs.

Our opponents pulled 1 back after some pressure but the boys battled hard pushing for a third but just never came.

Unfortunately the pressure we were put under, which the boys dealt with well, finally paid off for our opponents who got an equaliser.

The boys pushed for a winner but just ran out of time and energy.

Good all round performance and POM went to Henry Polkinghorne who was excellent throughout and had the skills on show today.

U9 Spitfires

U9 Spitfires continued their great and unbeaten start to 2023 even though we were not at our best to start with.

A very slow start found us a goal behind from our own error and we’re on the back foot for majority of the 1st quarter. Some great saves by Hector Hobbs kept us in the game.

As the game went on the boys grew into the game and started to move the ball around and a superb through ball from Alfie Bungay sent Brody Hibberd clear who calmly slotted home to put us level. This was followed by a similar ball from Elliott Finch and again Brody Hibberd finished cooly to complete a great comeback.

Really impressed how these boys have adapted to the top league.

POM was shared today between Hector Hobbs who kept us in the game with some great saves and Alfie Bungay who covered every part of the pitch and was instrumental in the comeback.

U9 Panthers

What a great game of football today against a good AFC Stoneham Wolves team. We picked up from last week and kept going. Tacking, passing and driving with the ball. We all worked as a team, passing, moving into space. The training is slowly taking shape.

MOM went to Harry, he was so composed at the back, with important tackles and great distribution. Well done Harry. Well done all of you, I’m so proud of you all. Special mention to Jake with 2 well taken magical moments from corners and Jenson with the well deserved Goal.

U12 Jaguars

AFC Stoneham U12 Jaguars 5 Fawley Falcons U12 Warriors 2

Despite having not played for over a month, the Jaguars moved effortlessly through the gears to dispatch Fawley with a very impressive performance.

The hosts started brightly, putting the visitors under early pressure. Freddie B, dangerous throughout, made a number of threatening runs, one of which saw him brought down in the box for a penalty. Elliot stepped up but was unfortunate to see his effort ricochet off the post. However, there was nothing unfortunate moments later when Elliot took the ball in the left channel, cut in on his right foot and curled in the ball from the angle into the top corner. The remainder of the first half saw the Jaguars comfortably control the game. Daniel kept the left winger extremely quiet, John provided deft control and calmness on the ball at left back and Freddie K showed some nice touches on his debut. When the opposition did breach the defence, Finn’s excellent positioning and speed off his line meant he nullified the threat.

The Jaguars began the second in the same manner as the first, and doubled the lead from close range through Charlie following an excellent team move. The hosts continued to probe, and Krish, who worked hard throughout, pushed a shot narrowly wide. Against the run of play, Fawley scored on the break, but the Jaguars remained unflustered and continued to play their football, working hard for each other all over the park. An excellent spell of pressure and link play eventually saw the Jaguars restore the two goal cushion, albeit from an unlikely source. Following a three player passing move, Matteo broke down the right, evading several defenders, before pulling the ball back from the touchline. The ball found its way to Archie who drilled a bullet of a half volley toward the goal. The goalkeeper made an incredible save, but from the resulting corner the ball fell to Isaac on the edge of the centre circle. His shot, though not clean, bounced awkwardly and the spin deceived the keeper enough to see the ball nestle in the corner of the net.

The Jaguars then moved in for the kill. John, Freddie B and Elliot combined beautifully for Freddie to cut in on his right and place the ball past the keeper for the fourth goal, and shortly after Freddie followed in a powerful Ramesses shot to add the fifth at the second attempt. The Jaguars continued to make chances, and so it came as a surprise when Fawley scored a consolation a couple of minutes from the end, though it made little difference to the result.

It was a terrific team performance from the Jaguars, and proof that when they play as a collective, they are capable of beating any team in the league. Up the Jags!

Well done to all of our teams that did manage to play.

Thank you

Brockenhurst Preview -

AFC Stoneham meet Brockenhurst for the third time this season when they travel to the Meadens Skoda Arena on Saturday 21st January in the Wessex Premier League.

 Brockenhurst:

The Badgers will be looking to bounce back in the Wessex Premier League following their surprising 6-2 defeat away to 17th place Blackfield& Langley last time out.

This will be the third match-up between the two teams already this season, previously meeting once in the league and once in the Wessex League Cup, with Stoneham coming out on top in both with an aggregate score of 8-3.

Brockenhurst are currently 11th in the table on 25 points, five places lower than they finished at the end of last season, but if results go their way, they could end the day as high as seventh.

With previous close encounters and Brockenhurst possessing one of the deadliest strikers in the league, it begs the question, will it be third time luck for the Badgers?

AFC Stoneham:

Two postponements on the bounce has disrupted Stoneham’s excellent run of form in the league where they remain unbeaten in six matches.

Last time out in the league they left it late and scraped past Cowes Sports 2-1, courtesy of goals from Jim Orvis and a stoppage time winner from Liam Callaghan.

Jake Thomson scored a hat-trick the last time these two met, where The Purps comfortably won 5-1 at home, so they will be hoping for a similar result this time around and ‘do the double’ over them in the league this season.

However, this fixture history shows that these games are always incredibly competitive and could go either way, meaning that Stoneham need to be on top form if they want to keep up their unbeaten run.

Last Five meetings:

13/12/22 AFC Stoneham 5-1 Brockenhurst (PREM)

22/11/22 Brockenhurst 2-3 AFC Stoneham (WLC)

26/03/22 AFC Stoneham 3-2 Brockenhurst (PREM)

25/01/22 AFC Stoneham 1-2 Brockenhurst (RCC)

27/11/21 Brockenhurst 1-1 AFC Stoneham (PREM)
