Christchurch preview

AFC Stoneham host Christchurch in their last Wessex Premier League game before Christmas on Saturday 17th December.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham are at home for their fourth successive game this weekend, with their most recent match being a 5-1 win over Brockenhurst.

A hat-trick from Jake Thomson, as well as goals from Scott Hills and Jamie Ovington, helped the Purps pick up another three points to maintain their pressure on the top two.

They have been without top-scorer Duarte Martins for their last two games, but still managed to score eight goals, showing that they are a force to be reckoned with as they try to climb the table.

It will be their last league game before Christmas, so let’s hope the Purps can get the three points to round off a fantastic 2022.

 Christchurch:

Christchurch’s last two league games have been cancelled due to frozen pitches, so their last match was a 2-0 loss away to Laverstock& Ford on 6th December.

Fawzi Saadi’s side currently sit 13th in the league, six places higher than they finished at the end of the 2021/22 season, suggesting that they are an improved side as they head into this game.

Their top scorer this season is Eder Batista, who has netted 11 times in 13 starts, showing that the Stoneham defence need to be ready to face a clinical striker.

 Last Three Meetings:

15/03/22- AFC Stoneham 5-0 Christchurch (PREM)

02/11/21- Christchurch 0-5 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

17/08/19- AFC Stoneham 0-1 Christchurch (PREM)

Brockenhurst match report

A Jake Thomson hattrick helped Stoneham come from behind to win 5-1 against Brockenhurst in the Wessex Premier League.

Yet again, Stoneham’s excellent facilities meant that this was the only game able to go ahead, with all the others being postponed due to the icy weather and frozen pitches.

The Stoneham wingers of Scott Hills and Liam Callaghan were busy early on, causing problems yet again for defenders with their quick and direct running, something that has become a regular occurrence this season.

Good pressure from Thomson and Hills caused panic between the two Brockenhurst centre backs, but luckily for them they finally managed to clear the ball before either of the two could pounce on it.

Despite all of the Purps’ early pressure, it was the away side who took the lead after capitalising on a defensive mistake in the 27th minute.

Miscommunication at the back saw Tom Parker-Trott’s clearance hit the back of Jamie Ovington, which then fell kindly to Brockenhurst’s new singing Conor Jevon, who tapped the ball into an empty net on his debut, putting the visitors one nil up.

Parker-Trott denied them a second shortly after, when Woods’ through ball found the feet of the dangerous O’Donnell, but his shot was smartly saved by the goalkeeper and turned away for a corner.

However, the home side finally found an equaliser after Cade Dyer’s halfway line free kick, who’s ball somehow managed to find an un-marked Thomson in plenty of space in the box and he rolled the ball into the far corner for his first of the game.

Two minutes later, the home side completed the comeback thanks to yet another Dyer set piece, when his corner deflected off Hills and was bundled over the line, putting the Purps 2-1 up just before half time.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 2-1 Brockenhurst

Stoneham started the second half in the same vein as the end of the first, scoring a goal two minutes after the break, with the clinical Thomson latching onto the cross from Callaghan to score a brace.

At 3-1 down, Brockenhurst didn’t look disheartened, and Harvey Woods was still causing the defence problems with his powerful and commanding runs, however the final ball wasn’t quite there on the night.

Cian Cleary came on and had a fantastic introduction, his speed and trickery was causing the full back an even bigger headache, after already having to mark Callaghan for the first 70 minutes.

He picked the ball up on the right-hand side and spun his man to create space ahead of him, which he then used to play a brilliant outside of the boot ball through to Thomson, who tucked it away for his hat-trick.

And like London buses, another one came shortly after, when Jim Orvis’ corner dropped to Ovington in the box, who instinctively back-heeled it into the net, making it two goals in two games for the centre back and putting Stoneham 5-1 up.

It was a professional end to the game from Stoneham, who kept the ball and didn’t give anything away, as well as Adam Pattinson getting his first minutes back on the pitch following a month out from injury.

Hythe and Dibden match report

AFC Stoneham win 3-0 for the second time this week as they beat Hythe and Dibden, moving up to 3rd in the Wessex Premier League table.

Ice cold conditions and frozen pitches meant that all the other games in the league were cancelled, making these an important three points as Stoneham capitalise on their game in hand.

Despite the weather, the action didn’t take long to warm up as Lewis Nagle was brought down in the box following his lighting quick run, earning his side a penalty in the first two minutes.

Captain Jim Orvis stepped up to take the penalty kick, smashing it past the keeper for his 10 th of the season and giving his side a very early lead.

Cade Dyer nearly doubled Stoneham’s lead after his corner almost curled all the way in at the back post, but goalkeeper Takada just managed to claw it out.

Hythe and Dibden really struggled to get out in the first 20 minutes, with Stoneham applying the pressure and not giving them any time to settle on the ball. Their route out was down the left-hand side to the tricky Papakonstantinou, who managed to win a few fouls for his team up the pitch and give his defence a break from the Stoneham surge.

In the 32 nd minute, Stoneham doubled their lead thanks to a fantastic goal from Liam Callaghan, who received the ball from Bainbridge on the edge of the box and smashed it into the bottom right-hand corner past a helpless Takada.

The last chance of the half fell for the energetic Callaghan, who was in the mood as he searched for his second, unfortunately his curling effort just skimmed the top of the bar, and the first half ended 2-0.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 2-0 Hythe and Dibden

Takada was a busy man early in the second half, saving shots from Hills and Orvis to keep his side in the game.

Lewis Nagle yet again was causing their defence problems with his bursting runs into the box, which caused to him to be brought down again, but the referee said no penalty and pointed for a corner.

However, the resulting corner from Orvis did lead to a third for Stoneham, when Jamie Ovington’s deflected effort looped over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The best chance for the away side fell to their new signing Alex Sawyer on the 71 st minute, but his low driven shot was saved by the feet of Tom Parker-Trott and went out for a corner.

Scott Hills was up front for this game in the absence of top-scorer Duarte Martins, and he nearly got himself a goal in the 75 th minute, but his powerful effort just went wide of the left-hand post, keeping the game at 3-0.

It was a quiet but professional end to the game from Stoneham, who looked to keep hold of the ball and earn a second successive clean sheet in the league.

The development squad also deserve huge credit too, as Stoneham ended the game with three youngsters on the pitch in Sunley, McNulty and Farndell, with the latter being included in the first team squad for the first time.

This win takes Stoneham up to 3 rd in the league on 36 points, with their next game coming at home to Brockenhurst on Tuesday 13 th December with a 7:45pm kick off.

AFC Stoneham Starting XI: T. Parker-Trott, Barnes, Dyer, Evans, Ovington, Clarke,Bainbridge, Orvis (c), Hills, Nagle, Callaghan

Brockenhurst preview

AFC Stoneham are at home for a third consecutive league game as they host Brockenhurst in the Wessex Premier League on Tuesday 13th December.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into this game off the back of two successive 3-0 league victories, with the most recent coming against Hythe & Dibden.

Goals from Orvis, Callaghan and Ovington were enough to get the three points and move Stoneham up to 3rd in the table.

The Purps were victorious in the last meeting between these two sides, edging out a 10-man Brockenhurst in a 3-2 league cup victory, courtesy of a last-minute free kick from Cade Dyer.

Stoneham will look to build on their good form and keep a third successive clean sheet, but they know it will be a tough ask against threatening Brockenhurst side.

Brockenhurst:

The badgers will have waited 10 days to play a game of football, with their last match being a 2-0 win over close-competitors Bournemouth poppies.

Two goals from their top-scorer Speechley-Price was enough to seal the victory, taking his tally to 17 for the season.

Stoneham already know the threat that Brockenhurst’s top-scorer possesses, having conceded against him in the most recent match-up between the two.

Brockenhurst currently sit 12th in the table and will look to get revenge on Stoneham for knocking them out of the league cup, making this an exciting midweek game to watch.

 Last meetings:

22/11/22 Brockenhurst 2-3 AFC Stoneham (WLC)

26/03/22 AFC Stoneham 3-2 Brockenhurst (PREM)

Weekend Round Up

Weekend round up

A much shorter version this week due to many games being cancelled.

U8 Jaguars

An excellent game played out today in the cold and sleet.

A very close game with a wonderful hat trick by MOM Freddie Nichols and a great goal by Jio made up the scorers for the Purps!! Thomas , Lincoln and James all worked tirelessly in this well played game.

U9 Rovers

U9 Rovers put in great display against Proco where a 5 minute spell goal fest was enough.

Henry Polkinghorne got the scoring under way when an unintentional through ball from the half way line went straight in followed closely by a Brody Hibberd brace and Mazen Ismael with his 1st goal for the team.

Solid defending throughout got David Trowbridge his clean sheet with POM going to Alfie Bungay who was solid in defence and a threat going forward.

Well played boys.

U9 Spitfires

Spitfires played our very own Panthers in a game that had everything snow, rain, sun wind!

A very end to end and even game in which the difference was in how clinical the boys were in front of goal.

On another day we could’ve won today but it just wasn’t to be. We go again next week. Credit to the boys who kept going in freezing conditions and didn’t get the result that their play merited.

Player of the match went to Hector the “Sweeper Keeper” who was great when called upon. Special mention to Henry Polkinghorne who found the target for us.

U11 Spitfires

The U11 Spitfires put in a brilliant performance. Hamble started the brightest with a couple of good chances early on ,forcing some great saves from Charlie. Stoneham then took control and dominated the second half. The defence and midfield were solid, providing a platform for some great attacking play. Freds was awarded man of the match for some majestic runs, super passes and two goals. Ethan also terrorised the defence with his pace and was rewarded with a goal himself. The boys showed again their strength when they play together as a team. All in all a great team performance. Well done boys. Merry Christmas purps

U16 Spitfires had a proper away game at Alton and the boys were superb. In freezing conditions with on/off snow throughout the hits started fast and Aaron Batista put us ahead latching onto a super through ball from Ollie Payne. Shortly after Ollie Payne got himself a goal cutting and striking into the corner. Alton pulled 1 back but the boys instantly responded to regain their 2 goal lead through Aaron Batista who similar to our last goal cut inside and fired into the bottom corner.

2nd half Alton responded and pulled 1 back but again the boys responded and regained their 2 goal lead when Ollie Payne shot from 25 yards which deflected up and over the Alton keeper. A controversial penalty for Alton made it 4-3 to us and in the last minute Alton got an equaliser which was harsh on the boys and feel I deserved but that’s football.

On another day and decisions go our way we won the game.

Proud of the boys today for their efforts in Baltic conditions and only having the 1 sub.

POM could have gone to anyone today as all were superb but Harry Rasor took the accolade who was solid in defence.

Well done to all of our teams who braved the cold weather!!

Hythe and Dibden preview

AFC Stoneham are at home for the second time this week as they host Hythe & Dibden in the Wessex Premier League on Saturday 10th December with a 3pm kick-off.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham are back at home again this weekend following midweek league success, beating Moneyfields 3-0 courtesy of goals from Bainbridge (x2) and Martins.

This was Martins 26th goal of the season, 12th in the league, and the win moves the Purps above Moneyfields into 5th, whilst still having a game in hand on most teams around them.

Therefore, a win on Saturday will help Stoneham maintain the pressure that they are applying on the top three.

 Hythe&Dibden

Hythe & Dibden were founded in 1902 and play their games at Clayfields after moving there in 2014.

They come into this game off the back of a nine-goal thriller as they beat 18th place Pagham 6-3, with their new signing Alex Sawyer scoring on his debut.

Terry Cox’s side currently sit 7th in the league, 13 positions higher than they finished last season, showing that they are an improved side this year as they travel to Stoneham.

Their top scorer this season is Craig Feeney, he has scored 12 goals this season, with five coming in the league, so he will be looking to add to his tally this weekend.

 Last Five Meetings:

04/10/22- Hythe & Dibden 0-2 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

02/04/22- Hythe & Dibden 2-0 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

Moneyfields match report

AFC Stoneham beat Moneyfields 3-0 on Tuesday night and move above them in the table to 5th.

Goals from Mat Bainbridge (x2) and top-scorer Duarte Martins was enough to seal the victory on Tuesday night, improving Stoneham’s position in the table as they look to chase down the top two.

The opening 10 minutes saw Stoneham dominate the ball, but neither team created a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Callaghan was dangerous early on with his powerful runs and he nearly set Hills up with his deep cross to the back post, however the Moneyfields defender did brilliantly to reach the ball first and put it out for a corner.

Moneyfields didn’t have too many chances in the game due to Stoneham not allowing them time on the ball, but their first chance fell to Bell, who’s volley went over the bar and didn’t trouble Parker-Trott.

Stoneham did have the ball in the net after the keeper dropped the ball from a corner, but the referee says Kramer was impeded as he tried to catch it and gave the away side a free kick.

This was then followed by a chance by Laycock after he was thread through on goal by Pennery, however the former Stoneham man puts his shot uncharacteristically over the bar.

In the 38th minute and after all their pressure, Stoneham finally took the lead after Hills stole the ball away from the defender, who was trying to shepherd the ball out of play, and his cross was met by Martins who headed it home for his 26th goal of the season.

Just before half time, Stoneham deservedly doubled their lead courtesy of Mat Bainbridge, who picked the ball up on the edge of the area and drilled the ball low into the bottom right-hand corner, giving his side a two-goal cushion at half time.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 2-0 Moneyfields FC

It was a perfect start for the Purps as they scored a third just six minutes into the second half.

A skewed clearance from Kramer fell kindly for Hills, who’s blocked shot found Bainbridge and he smashed the ballacross goal and into the side netting, doubling his goal tally for the game and giving the keeper no chance to save it.

Moneyfields had their first realchance of the second half, but it was saved comfortably by Parker-Trott, who did well to keep hold of it as Cornwell was racing in to pick up any loose balls.

The substitution of Nagle only added to Stoneham’s pressure and his pacey runs against a tiring defence caused some problems but didn’t lead to a goal.

The only real option Moneyfields had was to go long and look for their wingers, but for the second game in a row, Barnes and Dyer stopped any danger.

Towards the end of the game, the referee dished out two reds cards, one for Seidan and the other for a member of the Moneyfields coaching team, both for dissent after a challenge that saw the Moneyfields’ player forced off with an injury.

The last action of the game saw Nagle being brought down on the edge of the box, but the resulting free kick from Bainbridge was tipped over the bar and the game ended 3-0.

AFC Stoneham Starting XI: Parker-Trott, Barnes, Dyer, Bulpitt, Ovington, Clarke, Callaghan, Orvis (c), Martins, Bainbridge, Hills.

Subs: Thomson, Evans, Steel, Cleary, Nagle

Moneyfields Starting XI: Kramer, Chandler, Hazell, Pile, Cain, Sargeant, Pennery, Glen, Laycock, Bell, Cornwell.

 Subs: Birmingham, Wyatt, Cooper, Seidan

Sunday Dec 4th round up

U7 Panthers

Well done today guys.

Another solid performance against another U8 team. Thought you all played your part today. The energy, tackling, passing and shooting was superb today. Not to mention the saves!!

Caleb and Morgan were excellent today, with some strong tackles and great passing. Both with a magic moment. Evan and Harley was outstanding in midfield, breaking up play, driving with the ball and shooting. Both managed to bag themselves a hat trick of moments. Matthew and Seth worked their socks off up front, with some great footwork, shooting and all round play. Seth with his hat trick of moments and Matthew with 1.

But my man of the match went to our GK Jacob. Some of his saves and rushing out was outstanding today, and his distribution was also brilliant. Well done Jacob, well done all of you today.

U7 Tigers

Tigers U7s had another good test and having a great attitude to never give up .Half the team were under the weather today but gave there all .

MOTM MAX

AFC Stoneham Panthers U8

Panthers U8 vs. Winchester City U9 Red

Great performance this cold Sunday afternoon against Winchester City U9 Red. Our passing game was on point. The movement between the boys flowed well and it meant the opposition were finding it tricky to find their rhythm. Positioning was on point and the decision making from some of the players was great, especially when choosing to switch play and making use of the big pitch. All of the team battled hard. Goals today came from a brace from Jack, a further goal from Cooper and a penalty from Hayden. You should all be really proud of your efforts today as the opposition was strong but you kept your A game. Player of the Match went to Manny for his passing and positioning.

U9 Spitfires

U9 Spitfires played there 1st game after being moved up to Red 1 against our very own Thunder.

It took the boys a while to adjust to the new level and credit to Thunder as they played sone great stuff scoring some good goals and were out of sight by half time.

The 2nd 2 thirds the boys were amazing and played some great football and deservedly got the goal for their efforts through Brody Hibberd.

Lots of positives to take from today and we move on.

POM went to Mazen Ismaeel who was excellent and calm on the ball playing some great balls to start attacks and super defending/tracking back when needed.

U11 Jaguars

Marchwood Rangers Youth U11 v AFC Stoneham U11 Jaguars

An impressive performance from the Jags on a very cold December morning.

Right from the start the Jags were on the front foot and the Marchwood defence were tested repeatedly. Will using his pace and skill on the wing and driving the team forward.

Eventually the Jags were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box.

Goalkeeper Riley stepped up to take it and slotted it past the keeper.

The 2nd quarter saw Marchwood create chances but the Jags defence stayed strong with Galileo leading the way and making some important challenges.

At the other end a corner from Alex came out to Charlie who would score a great goal from the edge of the box.

Shortly after a ball played through to Egit was cooly dispatched to end his mini goal drought .

Quarter 3 was tighter, both defences on top form.

Wills link up play on the wing with Galileo and Billy creating long range efforts just off target.

Quarter 4 and Marchwood pushed hard to get back in the team. The Jags defensive line stayed strong though and soaked up the pressure.

When pushing forward, Charlie played a through ball to Wezi who rounded the keeper before a late penalty from Alex.

A disciplined effort from every player bringing a great performance.

Parents player of the week goes to Galileo, great defensive display and awareness helped get the team a cleansheet.

Coachs player of the week goes to Will who's work on the wing and great communication helped push the team forward.

Jag of the week goes to Egit, working hard in training, back on the scoresheet and never letting his head drop. Great attitude

U11 Wolves

U11 Wolves v Hedge End Rangers Hawks

A new shape and style to keep the 'Wonderful Wolves' on their toes led to numerous passes into goalscoring positions today with Fuku, Dash and captain Jude the main providers with each having their best game of the season, especially Wolf of the Week Dash who was excellent in providing the overload in various areas.

There were very encouraging signs today of a strike partnership forming between Harrison and Muhammed. Muhammed had significant contributions to the outcome of the match while Harrison also had his moment and is quickly learning how, when and where to make his runs as a striker.

At the back, Dominik had a good day in goal while Frankie and Dylan stepped up well to being asked to play as centre backs and in midfield Evan was very positive in moving the team forward.

U11 Spitfires

A disappointing result against a good Romsey team today. The boys played well in spells but didn’t click as a team. We learn from the game and move onto next week.

U12 Jaguars

AFC Stoneham Jaguars 1

Winchester City Reds 1

Hot on the heels of an impressive away win, the Jaguars provided top-of-the-table Winchester Reds with an almighty scare in a highly entertaining score draw.

Despite being on an 8 win run, Winchester were made to look second best for much of a first half in which the Jaguars took it to their high-flying opponents. The hosts created chance after chance but found the visiting goalkeeper in inspired form. Elliot, Owen, Matteo, Charlie and Freddie all had the opportunity to put the Jaguars ahead, but each was thwarted. A lung-busting run from Freddie saw the wide forward beat three players and be brought down from behind on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick, Elliot finally beat the visiting goalkeeper only to see his ferocious shot crash off the bar.

The first half wasn’t all one way traffic; as one would expect from a team in the visitors’ league position, they carried a real threat. Therefore, a 0-0 half time scoreline was testament to a rock solid defensive performance from Jamie, Isaac and Archie with Finn, as always, providing an indomitable presence in goal.

The second half began in the same fashion: the Jaguars outplaying and out-working their title-chasing opponents, with some fantastic combination play. Robert, Matteo and Ramesses all worked hard to control the centre of the park, and each provided moments of awareness and skill with excellent through balls to the tireless front three. The Winchester left winger found himself time and time again foiled by the ever-reliable Daniel. Eventually, the home pressure told and ten minutes in, Elliot calmly rolled the ball into the net and the Jaguars into the lead. However, they say in football a team is at their most vulnerable when they’ve just scored, and so it proved, when Winchester broke immediately down the left. The cross that came in caused confusion and the Winchester no. 8 pounced on the defensive indecision to drive in the equaliser.

Rather than sit deep, the Jaguars, pleasingly, continued to play for the win, and, therefore, what followed was an end to end fifteen minutes where both teams might have felt they could and probably should have won it. John impressed mightily, switching from his wide midfield position to an unfamiliar right back role and excelling against a very strong winger. Archie also demonstrated his versatility, putting in a strong shift at centre back. Both keepers were forced into saves and both teams had to defend dangerous corners. In the end, a point, in truth, could have been so much more for the home team, but as always what is more important than the points is the performance, and in that respect, the Jaguars can be mighty proud.

U12 Knights

AFC Stoneham Knights vs Southbrook Pirates

An early 9:00 kick off produced an excellent, competitive match today that was played in an excellent manor.

The opening 5 minutes started off evenly with both teams creating a couple of chances but in the end Southbrook took the lead with a top shot from distance. They scored their second and took a deserved 0-2 lead into the break.

At the halftime team talk we spoke about trying to up our intensity and desire to win and have the ball. We asked the boys to be fearless and brave with the ball. We wanted to see a reaction.

Coming out for the second half we were a changed team, we were on the front foot and had a much better edge to our game.

Shortly having a goal ruled out for offside, we finally got the breakthrough. Charlie P finishing smartly a great cross from Charlie S after some neat team passing.

With the bit between our teeth, we scored our 2nd. Charlie S with an exquisite solo goal, dribbling past 3/4 defenders and slotting home coolly past the keeper.

The next 10 minutes was end to end stuff. Both keeper making some great saves and keeping the scores level.

With 4 minutes to go Southbrook hearts were broken as we scored the winner. Picking up the ball in midfield, JP found himself with space and from 20 yards or so out, hit a rocket into the bottom corner of the net.

A goal to win any match, we saw out the remaining few minutes to claim the 3 points.

The character shown in the second half was amazing and it was great to see the subs up and cheering their teammates on.

Players of the day -

Oscar, a truly wonderful keeping display. Making a couple of huge saves and being so assured.

Alastair, playing at full back kept a grip on the pacy wingers and worked incredibly hard.

Up the Knights!

U12 Lions

Lions performed very well against higher league Eastleigh winning 3-1 with a hat trick for Cheikhouna.

Our opponents created many chances in the second half however player of the match , Simon "the cat" , pulled off 5 or 6 outstanding saves in goal to deny the hosts. Simon revealed after the game that dad promised to clean his boots this week if he pulled off some great saves. This method of motivation definitely worked!!

We would like to thank our hosts Eastleigh and referee Connor for an excellent game always played and conducted in the right spirit.

U13 Spitfires

Spitfires had a dominating but frustrating game at home to BTC Sharks.

The boys dominated and controlled the game but somehow found ourselves behind at half time against the run of play.

The 2nd half was the same where we controlled the game but just couldn’t get the breakthrough or at least it looked that way until Ethan Cripps hit 1 from outside the box the crept under the keeper in the last seconds of the game.

The least the boys deserved after their performance.

POM went to Will Lakin who was excellent in defence and a threat going forward.

U13 Panthers

Under 13 Panthers played on the 'big' senior 11 a side pitch today for the first time with an early one but thankfully the boys seemed awake as we took the lead in the 2nd minute and didn't look back from that point.

Some good passing football was played as we ran out 7-0 winners.

All three of our Sam's scored today with Robinson knocking in 4, White and Warner both with singles. Joey Gibson made sure it wasn't just the Sam show by scoring out last.

Man of the match was given to Robbo for his 4 goal showing but the lads all played well today.

U14 Tornadoes

Our U14 Tornadoes won 7-3 today.

Normally reserved manager Ian said" I was delighted with the boys today and their overall play was excellent with great determination. We are having a great season "

Well done to all of our teams !

Moneyfields preview

AFC Stoneham hostMoneyfields in the Wessex Premier League on Tuesday 6th December with a 7:45pm kick-off.

AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham return home following a narrow 3-2 defeat to table-toppers AFC Portchester last Saturday.

Martins and Orvis scored the goals, but Stoneham were just edged out of the game after putting in a fearless display against top of the league, something that many teams can’t say about themselves.

Martins’ goal now means that he has scored 25 this season, with 11 of these coming in the league, so he will be looking to take this good form into the game on Tuesday.

Stoneham currently sit 5th in the league, one point off Moneyfields, meaning that a win would take them above the opposition, whilst still having a game in hand on them.

Moneyfields:

Moneyfields were founded in 1987 and are a club based in Portsmouth, managed by Glenn Turnball.

They come into this game in flying form, losing just one in their last eight games, with the loss coming against Shaftesbury.

Their most recent game was on Friday, where they beat Blackfield& Langley 1-0, courtesy of a free-kick from Ryan Pennery.

Moneyfields also have the fourth highest scorer in the league this season, with Callum Laycock netting 17 goals in 17 games in all competitions, meaning that Stoneham’s defence need to be on top form to stop his goal a game ratio.

Last Three Meetings:

16/04/22- AFC Stoneham 2-0 Moneyfields (PREM)

18/12/21- Moneyfields 4-1 AFC Stoneham (PREM)

07/08/21 Moneyfields 1-3 AFC Stoneham (FA CUP)

Saturday Dec 3rd round up

Saturday Round Up

U7 Spitfires

So proud of the boys today. There were outstanding individual performances today but the main positive was how they all worked as a team, supporting each other, working hard for each other and checking on each other when they took a tumble. Which ultimately resulted in an incredible match.

Oscar was an absolute hero today and made so many saves giving us a solid platform to build on. Carlos as usual was an absolute Rock in defence protecting Oscar whilst providing some great balls forward for the boys to chase. Ted and Rylee for only their second game in this team were both amazing, you didn't stop running, tackling and doing your absolute best for the team. Especially great as you both didn't feel 100% massive well done. Dev, you were everywhere today, tracking back and breaking through the oppositions line to create chances for yourself and your team mates. As well as taking a few tackles along the way. A really brave performance and well taken goal. The Rock didn't stop running and was rewarded with 3 goals .

Finally our player of the match today Ellis, what a star. Just didn't stop running, tackling, passing and giving his all for the team, he was rewarded with 2 goals and an absolutely brilliant freekick. What impressed me most though was how he was the first to check on his teammates when they got hurt. Great performance Ellis and thoroughly deserved your award. He will now Captain the side in our next game as will all Motm winners from now on. A little incentive to the boys.

U7 Wolves

Off the back of a superb display last week the Wolves had the bit between their teeth today. Our passing and tackling was too much to handle and the lads' finishing was top drawer today. Some highlights to pick out were a solo effort from the back from Jacob, a wonderful free kick from Fyfe and an instinctive volley from Ollie. Our all round game was great with Louie, Jack, Harry and Vinnie dominating possession and making runs all game. Defensively we were solid and hardly gave the opposition a sniff. Players of the match today are Vinnie and Jack who both exemplified the determination and belief that we want to have as a team. Super stuff Wolves!

U9 Panthers

Unlucky today boys.

That was a tough game today.

Didn’t help ourselves in the 1st quarter conceding early goals, after that it was a uphill struggle! Thought we gave them too much respect, we needed to press all the time, the moment we stopped, they punished us.

Not taking anything away from them, they are a very good team. Man of the match went to Harry, is energy, workrate and tackling was outstanding today. Well done Harry.

Special mention to Jenson and Henry for their magical moments today.

U11 Girls Lionesses.

Whilst the result was not the greatest today the team had a great day out to the Isle of Wight.

Without a recognised goalkeeper again today we owe a huge thanks to both Sophia & Millie for playing a half each - you were both amazing!

The girls tried their best throughout and never gave up whilst many of the girls struggled with not feeling great they gave it there all and should be proud

Managers POTM today went to Floss who showed great footwork and improving week after week.

Parents POTM went to Eliana for constantly rising to the occasion with some great tackles and determination.

Well done girls, your behaviour throughout the day has been fantastic and will be a credit to Stoneham.

U12 Girls Lionesses

Well done to our little lionesses today what a turn around 1up at half time, losing 3-1 with 5mins to go then winning 4-3!!! Bo symonds getting girl of the match after going up front for last 5mins and scoring last two goals proud of the team..

AFC Stoneham Girls Panthers U11 3 Emsworth Town Pumas U11. 1

Whether it was the freezing cold wind or just an off day, the Panthers really struggled to get into this Cup Quarter Final in the first half and deservedly fell behind.

Abigail kept the Panthers in the game with a couple of saves from long distance shots and Mirela was unlucky to level the score with a fine solo run which she was unable to finish.

A few words of encouragement at half time seemed to have the desired effect and the Panthers took control in the second half.

Jess H was bought back on and made an instant impact. The hard working Jess P put her through and the shot from Jess H went across goal into the top corner.

Jess H put the Panthers 2-1 ahead with a similar goal before Mimi went past a couple of tackles before slotting home.

In the end, a place in the semi final was fully deserved.

AFC Portchester match report

AFC Stoneham narrowly lost 3-2 away to table-toppers AFC Portchester, who extend their unbeaten run to 17 matches.

It was a lively start to the game, with both teams threatening in attacking positions and wanting to put balls into the box.

It was Portchester who opened the scoring just seven minutes in, after Jones’ cross took a few deflections and fell kindly to Marley Ridge, who smashed it in at the far post for his 10th of the season.

Stoneham responded brilliantly and found an equaliser just three minutes later courtesy of top-scorer Duarte Martins, who met a great ball in from Jim Orvis and headed the ball past Mowthorpe for his 25th goal in all competitions.

Portchester started to dominate the ball more during this period, always looking long to their wingers to try and get them in behind Stoneham’s fullbacks, but Dyer and Barnes dealt with the danger well.

In the 28th minute, Martins won Stoneham a penalty, after beating the defender to the ball and being brought down in the process.

Despite missing a penalty in the week, Captain Orvis stepped up to take it and this time there was no doubt about it, as he smashed the ball into the side netting and gave his side a 2-1 lead.

This lead lasted a total of one minute, after a quick attack from kick-off found the danger man Brett Pitman on the edge of the box, who flicked the ball over the Stoneham defence and was met by Scott Jones to tap it home and level the scoring again.

The home side really started to ramp up the pressure, but Stoneham did enough to limit their chances and forced them to go long.

However, the home side managed to break the Stoneham defence down in the 38th minute when Ridge slipped the ball through to Scott Jones, who shot low into the net to score his second successive brace and give the Royals the lead at half time.

HALF TIME: AFC PORTCHESTER 3-2 AFC STONEHAM

It was a sloppy start to the second half for both teams, but it was Stoneham who had the best chance, however goalkeeper Mowthorpe got down well to save a close range shot from Martins.

There weren’t many chances in the first 20 minutes of this half, with both teams trying to utilise crosses, but both defences headed them away quite comfortably.

The best chance of the half arrived in the 68th minute after a ball in the box from Cade Dyer, but Bainbridge’s header back across goal was saved at full stretch by Mowthorpe, who tipped it past the post.

Mowthorpe yet again saved another effort, blocking Clements from getting an equaliser and putting on a man of the match display.

It was an end-to-end last 10 minutes, but Portchester did enough to see out the game, leaving the second half goalless, but the final result 3-2.

Overall, Stoneham manager James Phillips was pleased with his side’s performance although disappointed to lose

“The physical effort we put in was outstanding. Yes, we are disappointed to have lost but we have to take a lot of positives out of that. The important thing is to do that again in the next couple of games.”

AFC Portchester Starting XI:Mowthorpe, Wheeler, Williamson, Raine, Da Costa, Pearce, Cowan, Pitman (c), Ridge, Jones, Robinson

Subs: Bailey, Wilkins, Barker, Searle, Brook

AFC Stoneham Starting XI:Parker-Trott, Barnes, Dyer, Evans, Ovington, Clarke, Bainbridge, Orvis (c), Martins, Clements, Hills

AFC Portchester preview

AFC Stoneham will look to end top of the table’s unbeaten record as they travel to AFC

Portchester on Saturday 3 rd December with a 3pm kick-off.

AFC Portchester:

Nicknamed the Royals, Portchester play their home games at the Onsite Group stadium

under manager Dave Carter.

They have had an incredible unbeaten start to the season, winning 15 out of 16 matches,

sitting comfortably at the top of the table on 46 points.

Their most recent game was a 4-2 win away from home to Brockenhurst, courtesy of goals

from Da Costa, Jones (x2), and Pitman.

Brett Pitman, former Bournemouth striker, is the league’s top scorer with 29 goals in 20

games, meaning that Stoneham’s defence need to be on top form to stop the former

Championship player.

AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into this game off the back of a hard-fought cup win against Division One

side Petersfield Town.

The game on Wednesday was played in tough, foggy conditions and needed penalties to

find winner, with Stoneham coming out on top 5-4.

Stoneham are currently 5 th in the league and will look to take points off the league leaders

to climb up the table, but they know it will be a tough task against a free-flowing

Portchester side.

The Purps top-scorer Duarte Martins will certainly be looking to add goals to his tally this

Saturday and chase down Portchester’s Brett Pitman in the race for the golden boot.

Petersfield Town match report

AFC Stoneham edge past a resilient Petersfield side on penalties and are through to the

next round of the Russell Cotes Cup.

There was nothing to separate the two sides after a foggy and cold 90 minutes, resulting in

the game going straight to penalties, where Stoneham won 5-4 and sealed their place in the

next round.

It was an evenly contested first 10 minutes with both teams looking lively, however there

wasn’t much goal mouth action.

A long ball forward by goalkeeper Parker-Trott caused problems early on when it was flicked

on by Martins to Cleary, who’s shot was fumbled by the keeper and his rebounded effort

was blazed past the post.

Lewis Nagle was also a handful for defenders with his driving runs, with one of them

resulting in a promising free kick whipped in by Orvis, but Martins’ header just went wide of

the right-hand post.

Martins had another chance soon after following good link-up play with Cleary, but his shot

from the edge of the box was fired just high and wide, nearly nestling in the top corner.

Petersfield had a frighteningly quick front three, and they came close to opening the scoring

when Orepo’s fizzed in cross found the feet of Balde-Djuara, but his shot was also off target.

Stoneham had a good chance to take the lead just before half-time, but goalkeeper Wilson

tipped over a fierce shot from Callaghan, meaning his side went into the break level.

Half Time: AFC Stoneham 0-0 Petersfield Town

The second half started slowly and neither team were creating too many chances, so

Stoneham looked to the bench in the 63 rd minute and replaced Callaghan for Scott Hills, who

created an instant impact.

His authoritative runs were a problem for their fullbacks, and he managed to create a

shooting opportunity for himself in the 67 th minute, but his powerful effort sailed past the

post and allowed their defence to take a breather.

The visitors did enjoy a spell of possession, but the Stoneham defence was organised and in

good shape, limiting their opportunities

The Purps did have the ball in the net in the 80 th minute after a fantastic header from

Martins, however the referee deemed Martins to have nudge the defender and was quick to

give a free kick, with no real complaints by the players.

There were good chances towards the end of the game for both teams, with the first falling

to Martins again, who’s swivelled effort just missed the target.

Then in the 90 th minute of the game, a ball in from their number three found the head of

their captain, who’s looping header seemed to go over Parker-Trott in slow motion and

luckily went just over the bar, meaning that the game ended goalless and goes straight to

penalties.

Petersfield Town preview

AFC Stoneham host Division One side Petersfield Town in the Russell Cotes Cup on Wednesday 30th November with a 7:45pm kick-off.

 AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into this game off the back of a hard-fought 4-2 home win against an improved United Services Portsmouth side last Saturday.

Goals from Clarke, Bulpitt, Orvis, and Cleary were enough to seal the victory for the Purps and help maintain their good form, which they will hope to take with them into the cup.

They faced another Division One side in the previous round of this tournament, sweeping aside Fleet Town 4-1 at home courtesy of goals from Callaghan, Evans, Hills and Martins.

However, they know it won’t be an easy task against an in-form Petersfield side, who got the better of Stoneham in their last meeting.

 Petersfield Town:

Nicknamed the Rams, Division One Petersfield come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Totton &Eling.

They currently sit 4th in their league and are experiencing a great run of form, being unbeaten in seven games in all competitions.

The previous round of this cup saw them beat title contenders Andover New Street 2-0 away from home, thanks to goals from Greenough and top scorer Barsa, who has eight goals this season.

The away side will look to take their league form into this cup match and cause an upset by defeating a team in the league above them and seal their place in the next round.

Sunday Round Up

On a rain effected day

Panthers U8 vs. Bursledon Youth U9 Stars

The rain held off for our mid-afternoon match against Bursledon Youth U9 Stars. Solid start to the game with some great passing, attacking and defending by all, it really was end-to-end stuff. So much so we held a level score right through to the start of the third quarter. Hayden finally got us on the score sheet with a goal at the start of the third quarter. This was then followed by another goal from Fred. Bursledon were not giving up that easily as they fought back hard. Thanks to some awesome saves from Oscar in goal, we managed to stay two goals up. Into the fourth quarter more goals kept coming with a goal from Cooper (assisted by Jack) and another from Hayden. As we were leading, Bursledon bought on an extra player. This helped them as they gained a goal back. Nevertheless, before the final whistle Jack managed to grab the final goal of the game with a great assist from his team mate Fred. This has to be one of the best games spectators have witnessed this season so far. There were some mighty battles on both sides however the boys kept going right to the final whistle. Logan was strong in defence with him also having a crack on goal when the opportunity came. Vinnie was also a menace in defence, stopping everything that came his way and making some great clearances. Billy was strong with some great passes down the wing along with his defensive play and Manny was good up front waiting to follow up with the perfect through ball. Player of the day went to Cooper for being strong and for his unselfish play especially in the second quarter.

U9 Panthers

Unlucky today boys. Thought our workrate and movement was excellent today and if it wasn’t for their giant of a keeper, we would have scored at least 3 goals. They passed the ball round well and that was what lead to the two goals and our players not tracking back or ball watching so must concentrate better. However, on reflection, we deserved something out of that game.

Man of the match was Jenson, apart from his magical moment, he was a menace going forward and nearly replicated Maradona’s wonder goal against England, taking on the whole of the team.

Well done Jenson. Well done all of you today. Keep the workrate up.

U9 Spitfires

U9 Spitfires played their final game before moving up to the top league against Littleton Cyclones. A very slow start by the boys found themselves behind but immediately got back level through Elliott Finch from the spot. Littleton were the better team until half time and deservedly went in ahead.

The boys then upped their level and started to control the game and Brody Hibberd & Mazen Ismael found their shooting boots.

Good end to the game as we now prepare for going up against the best at this level.

Well done Spitfires.

U11 Spitfires

Another positive game for the U11 Spitfires today with a dominant performance. Freds got the scoring started in the first few minutes with a great header from a corner. More goals then came in the third and fourth quarters from Ethan, Charlie, Forbes, Zach and Alfie B. The boys limited pace to very few opportunities, with the opposition finally scoring from a free kick in the last minute. James picked up man of the match after yet another solid performance at the back.

U11 Wolves

Our Wolves put on a brave performance today. Playing against a well organised team who had started the season two groups above us in Blue 2, Wolves began very brightly and were easily on top throughout the first quarter with Jude and Fuku in control of midfield, often cleverly bringing Adam and Muhammed into play on the wings with Harry once again providing excellent back up to Muhammed down the right, and half chances were soon created for first Frankie and then Dash.

A forced change in the second quarter then upset the shape of the team from which they never recovered while for the second week running a single fast direct forward was able to outrun our full backs with punishing effect.

There was however a moment of glory for Harry as he successfully grabbed a brief opportunity to move into wide midfield during the second half.

Evan returned to his favoured left midfield today and took up some excellent attacking positions while Rayane showed alot of grit when returning to defensive midfield to plug a central hole.

Wolf of the Week is Alfie who has been at his very best at Centre Back ever since our move up to Yellow 1, strong, fast and determined, he is now leading our back line with intelligence and purpose.

Our Ladies Development squad got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Andover New Street .

Well done guys !

Saturday Round Up

U7 Hurricanes

A great game for Hurricanes today, we got off to a brilliant start and kept the momentum going til the very end, great passing and defending from all, each player had a moment of magic, lovely to see players mixing it up with positions, the boys played with great determination today, and should be rightly proud of them selves.

Parents Player went to Leo with 3 magical moments and MOTM went to Caleb with 3 magical moments

U7 Tigers

AFC Stoneham Tigers had another exciting game today against a good physical side .The Team played well and are relishing the challenges put in front of them each week.

Today's MOTM Alex

U7 Wolves

A real progress report for the Wolves today as they met Hedge End in a repeat of the first game of the season. The boys came flying out of the blocks today and early bird Vinnie was played in by Louie to get us going. Vinnie turned provider shortly after with a great tackle and run before shifting it to Harry who took his chance calmly. We controlled the midfield and used the space on the pitch brilliantly today and Fyfe was instrumental in this. Louie and Harry were their usual combative selves and gave Vinnie and Ollie license to cause trouble for the Hedge End defense. We talked about being cool and taking the time to make our chances count and we did that today. We didn't have it all our way though and at the back Jacob snuffed out attack after attack, winning the ball, moving into safer areas and getting us moving forward again. The whole game Hedge End only broke through our lines twice, the first forced an outstanding double save from Harry and the second time an excellent piece of skill and unstoppable strike from their forward.

Pleasingly, the lads managed their energy really well and we finished the game strongly with Ollie producing a fine moment to give the team what their recent performances have deserved. Players of the match could have gone to anyone but Paulo Maldini and Andrea Pirlo, oops Jacob and Fyfe got the awards this week. Super stuff Wolves

U9 Rovers

U9 Rovers played our final game of the ‘completion games’ against our very own Athletic. Slow start from the boys found us behind from a looping free kick but immediately replied through Henry Polkinghorne who then got his 2nd soon after.

In the 2nd third the boys dominated and quickly got themselves a 3 goal lead through a brace by Brody Hibberd and controlled the whole third.

The final third was a bit more even but a Chase Marjason brace completed a great win for the boys which ended a great competition.

Really pleased with all the boys efforts today and POM could of gone to any of the boys but Brody Hibberd took the award.

Well done Rovers.

U11 Lionesses

With the U11 Lionesses going into todays game missing 2 important outfield players in Millie & Hettie alongside our phenomenal goalkeeper Scarlett the girls pulled together with a fantastic team spirit.

With incredible team work starting in defence through to attack the girls played some fantastic football and found themselves 2 goals up at half time thanks to a brace from Lola.

Upon the restart, the girls found themselves again in control of the game, and April soon found the net to score her first league goal of the season before Lola complete her Hat-trick with a great finish into the bottom corner.

Unfortunately a penalty to the opponents in the last few minutes was cooly finished by their striker to complete the scoring and the game ending with us a 4-1 victors!

Huge thanks to both Eliana & Ava for playing a half in goal each - you were both brilliant

Player of the Match today went to the incredible Ava, first half she won every tackle and played some nice passes and second half turned into our very own Mary Earps in goal making some great saves! You should be very proud

U11 Girls

AFC Stoneham Girls Panthers 4

Waltham Wolves 1

The Panthers bounced back from their first defeat of the season with a convincing win.

The Panthers took an early lead when a Jess H cross/shot was dropped by the visitors keeper and Aimee tapped home the rebound.

The Panthers had several chances saved before Waltham created their first opening when a shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Abigail.

The Panthers continued to dominate but the game changed when Georgia (much to her annoyance) was moved upfront.

It took only a few minutes for her to make the score 2-0 when beating the keeper with a tidy finish after collecting the ball on the right of the area.

Georgia scored her second with a similar finish to make the score 3-0 before the break.

The second half started as a midfield battle with Mirela, Mimi, Emily and Lyra working hard. A cross from Lyra was deflected into her own goal by an opposing defender to make the score 4-0.

The parity rule came into play and the defence of Ilyse, Victoria and Rosie did well to prevent any chances for Waltham.

Eventually, a long range shot bounced into the net giving Abigail no chance to make the score 4-1.

Away team POM - Mirela

US Portsmouth match report

AFC Stoneham survived a late scare and came from behind to beat United Services Portsmouth 4-2 in an action-packed contest.

The opening 10 minutes saw both teams have an equal share of possession but not really test any of the two goalkeepers, with the first shot from U.S Portsmouth’s Luke Richards being comfortably saved by goalkeeper Tom Parker-Trott.

Lewis Nagle was lively early on, with his devasting runs giving their defence a headache, but his curling efforts didn’t cause the goalkeeper too much trouble.

Scott Hills found himself one on one with the goalkeeper early on after a great ball from Jim Orvis, but Shepard got down well to save it and the follow up shot from Mat Bainbridge was blazed over the bar.

Nagle and Hills both put a handful of crosses into the box early on, but on nearly every occasion the U.S Portsmouth defence dealt with them efficiently and cleared the danger.

A short free-kick given to Orvis created the best chance of the first half, but Callaghan just headed over following pressure from the on-rushing goalkeeper.

U.S Portsmouth’s number nine Lamin Jatta was causing the Stoneham defence problems, but he was forced to drop deep to collect the ball, keeping him away from any goal-scoring opportunities.

AFC Stoneham’s solid defensive shape meant that U.S Portsmouth had to try their luck from long-range on many occasions, not troubling Parker-Trott too much and creating a quiet end to the first half.

HALF TIME: AFC Stoneham 0-0 United Services Portsmouth

Jamie Bulpitt replaced Liam Callaghan at the break, hoping to bring solidity to the midfield and push for the opening goal of the game.

However, the first goal of the game came for the away side five minutes later after confusion between Clarke and Ovington allowed Burroughs to steal in and

slot the ball past Parker-Trott to give Portsmouth a 1-0 lead.

AFC Stoneham thought they had equalised just minutes later but as the ball was fired goal-wards, it hit the hand of a man in purple and the referee was quick to disallow it and give a free-kick to the away side.

But they did indeed level the scoring in the 62nd minute after Mat Bainbridge’s on-target corner was nodded in on the line by centre-back Ben Clarke, kick-starting Stoneham’s comeback.

The persistentPurps were probing again and nearly took the lead shortly after, but Bainbridge’s through ball was blocked by the hand of the last U.S Portsmouth defender, who was a lucky man to escape a red.

AFC Stoneham finally went in front in the 68th minute thanks to substitute Jamie Bulpitt, who’s long-range effort managed to creep its way past the scrambling goalkeeper and into the bottom right-hand corner.

This is where the home side really started to take control of the game and a third only took eight minutes to arrive, after Scott Hills was brought down in the box before he was able to pull the trigger, earning a penalty for his side.

Captain Jim Orvis took the penalty kick and rolled it into the bottom left corner, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving his side a two-goal cushion.

Three minutes later, U.S Portsmouth won a penalty for themselves after their captain Cam Quirke was bought down in the box, which was then converted by Sam Emeneyto make the score line 3-2.

In the 90th minute, U.S Portsmouth’s Lamin Jatta looked almost certain to level the scoring after taking the ball around Parker-Trott and having an open goal to tap it into, but he somehow fired the ball wide and let Stoneham off big time, missing the opportunity to level things late on.

Deep into added time, Cian Cleary wrapped up the three points for Stoneham after his clinical effort found the bottom right-hand corner and meant the game ended 4-2 to the Purps.

AFC Stoneham Starting XI: Parker-Trott, Barnes, Dyer, Bainbridge, Ovington, Clarke, Nagle, Orvis (79’), Hills, Clements (66’), Callaghan (45’)

SUBS: Evans (79’), Bulpitt (45’), McNulty, Thomson, Cleary (66’)

United Services Portsmouth Starting XI:Shepard, Aston, McGee, Burns, Emeney, Benjamin, Jibley, Quirke (c), Jatta, Burroughs, Richards.

Subs: Spencer, Grant, Andrews, Mathe, Jewell.

US Portsmouth match preview

AFC Stoneham return to league action following midweek success in the cup as they host

United Services Portsmouth on Saturday 26 th November with a 3pm kick-off.

AFC Stoneham:

Stoneham come into this game off the back of a hard-fought 3-2 victory on Tuesday night

against the 10 men of Brockenhurst.

Once the pitch passed the inspection from the referee, goals from Ockwell, Martins and

Dyer were enough to seal the victory and send Stoneham into the next round of the Wessex

League Cup.

Stoneham currently sit 5 th in the league, with games in hand on those above them, so three

points would help strengthen their position as they try to climb the league table.

However, they will be without Jamie Ovington and top goal scorer Duarte Martins for this

game due to suspension.

United Services of Portsmouth:

U.S Portsmouth were formed in 1962 with the intention of enabling navy players to play

competitive football at the highest level possible.

They gained promotion to the Wessex Premier League in the 2020/21 season and play their

home games at HMS Temeraire under the manager Frazer Quirke.

They currently sit 15 th in the league and come into this after a 5-0 thrashing of bottom of the

league Alresford, with all five goals being scored by different players.

U.S Portsmouth have won 3 of their last 5 matches, with 20 goals being scored across these

games, suggesting that Saturday’s clash might be a high scoring one.

Brockenhurst match report

AFC Stoneham’s dogged display saw them come from behind to beat 10-man Brockenhurst 3-2 and seal their place in the next round of the Wessex League Cup.

A 90th minute deflected free kick from Cade Dyer saved the match from going to penalties and broke Brockenhurst hearts after playing most of the game with 10 men.

It was a competitive start to the game with a flurry of chances for both teams, with the best chance falling to Stoneham striker Martins when the goalkeeper mis-judged the ball and left him with an almost empty net, but his shot was blocked by the desperate defender who spared the goalkeeper’s blushes.

Brockenhurst had a clear corner tactic from early on when they kept crowding keeper Tom Parker-Trott, but the Stoneham defence protected him well and headed away any potential danger.

Liam Callaghan also looked lively and caused the Brockenhurst defence all sorts of problems with his explosive runs and quick feet, which nearly led to a goal when his cross was skewed by the defender, but luckily spun back to the thankful goalkeeper Snelling.

The big talking point happened in the 18th minute when Joe Chamberlain brought down Cian Cleary right on the line of the box as he was one on one with the goalkeeper, resulting in a red card for the Brockenhurst man.

Four minutes later, Stoneham took advantage of the extra man and grabbed the lead after Bainbridge’s deep free kick was headed back across goal by Clarke and put in by centre back George Ockwell.

However, it only took the home side four minutes to respond when a long ball was flicked on by Woods to top-scorer Speechley-Price, who slotted it past Parker-Trott for his 14th goal of the season.

Stoneham were then forced into a change before half-time when Clarke went off injured and was replaced by Jamie Ovington.

HALF TIME- Brockenhurst 1-1 AFC Stoneham

The second half started in the worst possible way for Stoneham after Brockenhurst took the lead straight from kick-off, when a dangerous cross deflected off Ovington and in for an own goal.

Changes were needed for Stoneham as Brockenhurst started to get on top, so they brought on Orvis and Nagle for Bulpitt and Cleary, in the hope that they could be game changers.

A huge mix up at the back for Brockenhurst nearly saw Stoneham draw level when the goalkeeper tried to keep the ball in play but gave it straight to the dangerous Duarte Martins, but Snelling managed to recover and tip the resulting shot past the post.

In the 70th minute Stoneham found their route back into the game after Jim Orvis’s pinpoint free kick met the head of Martins, who nodded it past the keeper for his 22ndgoal in all competitions and level the scoring at 2-2.

The 10 men of Brockenhurst certainly didn’t look disheartened with the equaliser, as they flooded forward looking for a third, which they would have got if it wasn’t for Ovington’s last ditch tackle that stopped the attacker from pulling the trigger.

As the game was drawing to a close, both teams looked tired on a sticky pitch and were searching for that bit of inspiration to find them a goal.

This is exactly what Stoneham got when substitute Lewis Nagle went on a marauding run down the right-hand side, tricking his way past defenders before being fouled as he cut inside.

Up stepped Cade Dyer to take the free kick, who’s strike took a big deflection from the wall and found its way into the corner of the net, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and sending AFC Stoneham into the next round of the cup.

It wasn’t the performance that Stoneham would have wanted but it’s the result that counts, and huge credit to Brockenhurst who battled well with 10 men.
